I have 5 batteries that were used as back-up power during outages for broadband network out post. I believe one per out post. 3 of them are sealed gelled electrolyte, same make, size, and resting voltage of 13.05 to 13.15 volts. 2 are just sealed wet electrolyte, same make, size and resting voltage of 12.8 to 12.9 volts. All 5 are close to the same physical size the 3 gelled batteries are just slictly taller. I was told the 3 gelled batteries were 100-amp hour. I cannot find anything on them for a size code. Is it safe to wire all 5 together for a battery bank? If not what would be the best way to use the 5 of them.
Thanks, Cory

I think it would be OK but not ideal
gell batteries are normally not well suited to RE installs as far as I've read.
there is lots to read on the internet re battery chemistries.

If they are pretty much the same size it would be safe to assume their capacities are close enough.

what is the intended voltage 12 /24 /48?
Id be inclined to run 24 or 48V as voltage drop/line losses are less leaving you with a spare, flog that one on ebay.

I think like everything if the price is right, compromises are acceptable!
if they last a little less and you paid alot less then you are ahead.

Thanks Karl, I did get these batteries for a good price about $100 for all 5. I got them just to have some to start out with. I hope to find a good deal on some nice 6-volt batteries to go with long term. My long-term system voltage will be 24 volts. I am undecided on what voltage to start with but, based on the info you've giving me I think I will start out with 24 also. Are there and opinions on this (Accurate Tools ATSIU Series Stackable 2500/5000 Watt Peak 48V DC to 240V AC Power Inverter) sold on EBAY?
Thanks, Cory

48V is the winner as line losses start adding up quickly at anything less (they're significant even at 48V truth be known)
In fact USA has soaked up most of the worlds copper in their terrible 110V grid!!!
I did some more reading on the gel batteries and they should be fine $100 is a bargain, I'm looking at $100 each for 12V 85aH AGM batteries 2nd hand over here.
