I was driving through San Diego today and saw this windmill in someone's front yard. I thought it was an Aeromotor, but when I stopped to snap some shots, turns out it was something else: It's a "Dempster Mill": This next one is a shot of the gearbox and yaw control. Here's a tight shot of that gearbox. The upside-down name is Beatrice, Nebraska. I think it says "Dempster" in the little inclosed box on the side of it, but my eyesight isn't what it was 50 years ago! Here is the furling gear: Oztules: Check out the little grease fitting (?) just aft of the hub: This style of windmill is an up-wind, powerful, slow-turning turbine used mainly for pumping water. This one is now merely "kinetic art". It works, but usually just has a potted plant attached to the down rod. This last shot is the down rod and a coupling device: That's all folks! MacGyver is a bit too self-conscious to actually "show" out stuff he's built. His stuff sucks compared to even this hundred-year-old jenny. As soon as he's saved up enough to buy the gold for the gilded edges, he'll post some pics. Edit: Hmmmm just had a thought: I also like to tinker with plants. Studied Botany at the University of Washington about a thousand years ago. Anyway, I have a ton of pictures of my greenhouse and plant friends on my Web site if it's a look-see you're hankerin' for! . . . . . Mac Nothing difficult is ever easy! Okay. I'll get into the cupboard and dig out a bunch of old air engines and stuff, but I have to tell you: When a project goes south (as many do) I throw them into a closet in my shop and shut the door. I have lots of half-done (as well as half-baked!) projects, it'll amaze you. I'll line things up and take some pictures and post them here somewhere, probably in "Other Stuff" Unfortunately, ALL my solar stuff is history. I don't have any pictures and I don't have any stuff left. I intend on building another flat-plate, oil-filled solar collector to use with my trailer, but it's not built yet. I did it over 40 years ago, but that one is likely in a landfill somewhere in Florida. I'll also throw in a picture of my lathe and you'll see why I make small stuff. Standby! My end game is to have all my stuff run on 12 volts. The reason for this is that I intend on retiring next year and I'm going to live in my travel trailer. Here's a link to my trailer. I'm going to take out the front bed and make the "bedroom" into a shop. The bed will be as wide as a twin and 7 feet long (cause I'm almost 7 feet long!). The new bed will fold out of the wall to give me more room in my "shop". I'll post pics when that day comes around. . . . . . Mac Nothing difficult is ever easy!
