I found this charge controller at oatleyelectronics
I just want an opinion from some of the more knowledgable in this forum if this charge controler will do for a F & P mill or am i barking up the wrong tree.
I started out with nothing... I still have most of it.

Hmmmmm.

Not sure on the link as it took me to a site that gave me a screen of garbage.

If you are barking at trees than there is more problems than a charge controller will fix

thanks for the replys.
Isaiah I was looking for a kit to build with all the components included so there was no chance of me getting parts and colours wrong when purchasing them, I am sort of electronicaly impared, a for dummies would suit me best. what i would like to know will this one oatleyelectronicsdo the same job as the one in this forum simple charge controler.

Downwind the link is working fine so ive been told.

Sorry windy it was not your link i was reffering to.

The oatley kit looks to do way more than the basic opamp circuit on the front page, and should do what you want and then some +++.

By what a quick read implied, was you will need 3 phase down to the controller and if this dont suit your set up than the opamp circuit will suit better.

It is also what type of mill you have, as a short across the 3 phases wont pull up a F&P mill. This is what the oatley controller dose to limit the power to the batteries.

I would say go for it on first read but i have not gone through the circuit to know exactly what they are doing.
But it sounds good to me!!

Gordon and Oz swear by phase control but they run AXFX mills that will pull up with shorted phases.

At the end of the day the only thing that will save a F&P mill is furling. Regardless of the voltage controller, this will only save the batteries.

Pete.

I have just read both the schematics and instructions on both.

the one on the forum is going to cost ~$40 to build
still need the diodes at $5 each =$15
Pic chip $?? couple of bucks
veroboard is going to be $5 or more
relay is going to be $7
handfull of resistors is going to be a couple of bucks
trim pots a couple of bucks.

All of this is basically free to someone with a drawer full of bits, but as always you cant buy one of each, you end up with 5 of each.

Myself - in your position, I hate to say it...
the oatley electronics is a better starting point as
everything is marked on the board and its tougher to get wrong. and You still have to build it!

The one on the forum would be better suited to someone who had a drawer full of bits and could whack it together for almost nothing.

ALSO note that at 300W it would suit a STAR winding only, no 7X2P delta.

I think I'd start with a 60S in 7X2P first as it will be current limited by its design and get good output at low revs -chances of getting more than 300W out of into 12V almost nil but cutin will be VERY low, a good combo for a 1-1.5m diameter mill, if your simple mill doesnt furl make sure its all bolted together well as shell spin to 1000rpm+ (i know a guy who does this and claims its fine in suburbia as there just isnt enough wind to get seriously out of control)Edited by KarlJ 2010-02-27

Thanks for the help guys, I have orded the oatley controler, now its wait and see, and put the rest of the mill together. Just need to sort a hub for the blades without spending a fotune on the ally ones.

It looks a neat kit, Hindenburg

I was wondering where the
that it includes 10 x 20A Schottky diodes
fit in on the board that they quoted as supplied in the kit.

Downwind if you look closely at the 8 large black heat sinks the 6 have 1 each bolted to them and the 2 heat sinks on there own have 2 each bolted to them.
