Hello all- new guy here. Anyone using a permanent magnet ac servo motor for an alternator here? I'm the guy that let that secret out on Field Lines years ago. They don't like me much, they are trying to sell a product. I found you guys down under! |

Something like this. This is a 6kw motor. 6000watts. 200volts @ 30amps. 16volts @200rpm and 30 amps is just the starting point. You don't want to go over the name plate rating but really it will do 5 times as much with the right prop. |

Or this ![]() You can see this one needs a big prop for the 150 rpm cut in. So a small package for about a 400 watt machine. But still probably an 8' prop. I have had this one up with an 8' prop and it did very well in light winds on a test stand. I saw 10 amps easy into the battery. The prop needed better balancing so I haven't played with it since. |

To get this. This is a 9kw motor and I have seen over 100amps out of it at 15volts. |

Hi 97fishmt. Yes I did use a servo motor once, it worked very well from memory. But if its in good condition, its worth a lot of money as a servo motor! You could sell that and get the funds to build a couple of axial flux turbines. Glenn The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is right now. JAQ |

Just out of interest what is a motor like that actually worth to buy? Pete. Ps. if you are nice to use here we wont throw stones at you. Sometimes it just works |

Welcome 97fishmt Looks impressive I haven't seen any of these in Australia though, what does it weigh what does it cost and what will it produce??? We are free radicals here I think so you should fit in well. All the best Bob Foolin Around |

I have a couple of these, Pacific Scientific Brand. These use SaCo cast magnets on the inner rotor. Mine are 4pole, with 16 curved magnets, arranged with a twist, and have nil cogging. These are low inertia, with the smallish rotor dia, and low rotor mass. Mine have short shafts, and tachsyn encoding as a motor. These were quite expensive new. You need the larger frame size units with low inductance windings for best use as a windmill. Mine were designed for 300VDC and 4000RPM. They worked well with gearing on a solar car pre wheel motors. They are used a lot in the automotive, robotics machine assembly lines, instead of people to make cars etc. I would be wary of hanging a large windmill rotor directly off the shaft. I remember Glenn, I told you to give it a try. So you tore that robot apart and checked it out. Seemed like you were happy but I never herd if you made a mill out of it or the other one. Nice to see you guys doing so much 1/2 way around the world. Glad I found ya! |

Hey Pete look on ebay at the servo motors. I just can't resist when they go for $30 so I have about a dozen now. New they can be $10k |

Hi Bob They are out there. I bought my first one from Boeing airplane company. New old stock from there surplus store for $200. Took a gamble on it because everything was in German. I was able to make out 144 volt 65 amp 3 phase y @2000 rpm. Weighs about 100 lbs. So for an alternator I see the 65 amps at a slower speed like 200 rpm and 14.5 volts. Works perfect for a wind turbine. |

Hi Gordon I have bought about a dozen off ebey in the last 5 years or so. I look for the 200 volt machines with winding resistance less than an ohm and the most amperage I can find. 20 or 30 amp units go for $30 if no one is looking. Doesn't seem that way anymore though. I do have some 360 volt and 400 volt ones but the rpm is around 1500. The 200 volt ones work perfectly for 12 volt direct drive if you find one with 2000 rpm or less depending on what size rotor you are planning on. The shafts on all mine are 1 3/8" plenty big enough for a 10' rotor with very nice bearings. I have been running a 9kw siemens for around 10 years now it just keeps pumping out power to the batteries. I plan on going to a higher voltage soon, 24 volt or 48 volt. I may have to start looking for other motors, I have seen some 600 volt ones. I'm just trying out what I can find for cheep and have been doing it for over 20 years. |

Yes that's the one. I'm better at typing now and communicating I hope. I guess I just wanted to share to the world. So that one is this one. |

fish- i'm on the servo motor kick for my first mill. getting really close to being done. i found a fanuc motor on ebay. seems to do well on my ghetto bench tests. i guess time will tell! birdhouse i pee more than once before flushing, and don't have to flush at all up at the ranch! |

fish- thanks for the encouraging words! i hope it works awesome! hits 24 volts at 240 rpm. 8.5 ft. dia. just got a layer of fiber glass on the blades the other day. lately, i've been trucking away at it for sure! hoping to have it up by june 19th! here's a few photos... nothing recent... hope this link works! pics birdhouse i pee more than once before flushing, and don't have to flush at all up at the ranch! |

yea, it's facebook... i'm putting this thing up at my ranch where i can't keep track of it, so i'm really worried about getting the furling down right. my solution is to mount the thing off the front of my truck and use the speedo to dial in the furling. it just so happens i've got dual 1.25" reese type hitches on the front. i'll take video of that for sure! getting excited for that experiment! birdhouse i pee more than once before flushing, and don't have to flush at all up at the ranch! |
