Having been out and about on the weekend while it was windy. I drove past a 3 bladed windmill (it appeared to be the same design as sold on eBay) and I was shocked at how noisy it was. It was a windy day and the windmill furling could be seen. Having observed other windmills the noise was not noticeable. How noisy are peoples home made wind mills? |

It depends on how well the blades were made. Those cheap windmills have blades that are extruded from a die, and have no twist or taper. This means part of the blade length is always stalling. Normally not a problem at low or normal wind speeds, but at high wind speeds the stall creates a lot of noise, as you noticed. A set of home made blades, if made properly with close to the correct angles/twist, should make very little noise, even at high speed. Ideally the near by trees would make as much noise as a well build windmill. That said, when a windmill furls they can make a little more noise than normal, as the blades angles are all thrown out of wack. The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is right now. JAQ |

This is consistent with the rest of my observations that a well made windmill can barely be herd over the ambient noise. |
