Having been out and about on the weekend while it was windy.

I drove past a 3 bladed windmill (it appeared to be the same design as sold on eBay) and I was shocked at how noisy it was.

It was a windy day and the windmill furling could be seen.

Having observed other windmills the noise was not noticeable.

How noisy are peoples home made wind mills?

It depends on how well the blades were made. Those cheap windmills have blades that are extruded from a die, and have no twist or taper. This means part of the blade length is always stalling. Normally not a problem at low or normal wind speeds, but at high wind speeds the stall creates a lot of noise, as you noticed.
A set of home made blades, if made properly with close to the correct angles/twist, should make very little noise, even at high speed. Ideally the near by trees would make as much noise as a well build windmill.
That said, when a windmill furls they can make a little more noise than normal, as the blades angles are all thrown out of wack.
The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is right now.

This is consistent with the rest of my observations that a well made windmill can barely be herd over the ambient noise.
