Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Well its official, Dick Smith is off my “people I hope to meet” list.

I was listening to Macca this morning on his ABC radio show Australia All Over http://www.abc.net.au/australiaallover/. It’s a friendly talk back show and not bad listening for a Sunday morning.

Anyway, this morning Dick Smith phoned in, as he does from time to time, and I listened in half asleep dazed disbelieve to what he had to ramble on about. In a nutshell, Dick recently drove through a part of the country side he had been through before, only this time he saw a new wind farm instead of the view he was expecting. Dick then said wind farms are an eyesore and nothing more than a token by the government. He then proceeded to put down wind and solar power, including domestic installations, and said we should go nuclear.

I couldn’t believe it. I’ve been a fan of Dick Smith since he started up his electronics stores back in the 1970’s. And I remember following his helicopter endeavors over the polar caps . I even buy his Dick Smith brand of peanut butter!

Then to hear him make these ignorant comments about wind and solar, and to suggest we use nuclear to power out country, just blew me away.

There is only enough uranium in the ground for a further 50 years of power generation at current demand. Much less if new nuclear power stations are built. What then Dick, back to Coal?

In Europe there are wind farms everywhere, to quote …

“Wind power today, in an average wind year, generates the equivalent of over 20% of Denmark’s electricity use and 25–30% of that in three German Länder, and on windy days with light loads, over 100% of the load in certain regions, particularly in West Denmark, North Germany, and northern Spain”

You going to tell them their wind farms are a token Dick?

I’m just very disappointed, lost all respect for the guy, which is difficult after so many years. No more Dick Smith peanut butter in my house, I find the jar is an eyesore.

During the week hopefully the transcript of the call will be online and I’ll post a link.

yea i'm not much of a fan of dick smiths anymore ether not because of that but because they have slowly started to phase out components in favor of Tv's and computers and the like. but hearing that just makes it even worse. good bye dick smith.Edited by terrapinlogo 2009-10-27
If it doesn't work hit it with a bigger hammer.
If it still doesn't work you probably shouldn't of hit it.

Yeah i heard it too.
I reckon it was a set up.Macca is forever bagging anything that doesn't burn fossil fuels. Now he's got Dick to go in and bat for him.You would think that someone like him that gets to see more of Australia than most of us could also see whats happening out there.Someone wrote in The Age Green guide this week.

"Macca's job on Sunday mornings is to facilitate interviews with interesting people. We don't pay our taxes to have him swamp our airways with his ill-informed,biased,ignorant opinions on things such as emmision trading schemes." Joan Ryan Ballarat.

I'm with you Joan.I might ring him and offer him a windmill for his Gidday Van.I,m sure the forum could help him see the error in his ways.

Anthony.

Glad to hear others heard it too. And yes I'm starting to think it was staged as well. I found the audio feed of the phone call.

http://www.abc.net.au/australiaallover/stories/aao_mod_7.asx

Its a streaming media file, so you dont need to wait for the whole thing to download, just slide along to 27:07 to hear Dick Smith call in.
