I've been in IT, off and on, for almost 30 years. Started programming on a TRS80, bought a VIC20, then a Mcrobee. Wanted to buy a Apple, but couldnt afford it at the time. All these years later and I finally made my contribution to Steve Jobs retirement fund, and bought a iPhone. Its a 3GS, 16Gig, with the updated OS. I was planning to wait for the next model, the iPhone 4, but the 3GS was going cheap ( $0 ) on a 24 month contract, and was cheaper than my exising mobile phone plan. Now I just need to learn how to use the thing. Glenn The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is right now. JAQ |

Hi Glenn You will have some fun with that phone, my wife has one and even the kids haven't worked all it will do, very hard on battery though, she has another spare phone to keep her going through the day, as if its used a lot needs charging in 8-9 hours. She got me one but it wont work on the farm so lives in its box for when I go to town, then I forget it, so it doesn't give me a headache at all, she has hers full of blurry pics of the grand kids, I think not the phones fault as she doesn't understand that it should be held still when taking a picture. Have fun with new toy. All the best Bob Foolin Around |

The iPhone has a Safari web browser built in, so I tried the iPhone on the PicLogs online data page http://www.thebackshed.com/piclog/report3.asp, and it worked perfectly ![]() That means I can use my mobile phone while I'm out and about, to see how my RE installation is doing at home. I'm excited! Glenn The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is right now. JAQ |

/Rant At least you got it for $0 I can't believe sheeple pay $$$ for something that becomes worthless within 2 years, can't replace the battery, works better when its OS is deleted etc etc..... Rotting fruit... BJ Blaster said it best with his new HTC phone. Which might be my upgrade.... one day - as I still use a Nokia 5110 daily. ![]() Behold the reliability of the 5110!! I have a box of them and each time I break dropping it 10 meters on a construction site - I grab another one and swap the SIM ![]() People laugh when I answer it, but the joke's on them when their fancy phone hits the floor and shatters like glass. I, like Glenn would find accessing web stuff and remote equipment quite handy. I would use a fancy phone to the extent of its design, and then tweak it for something insane... /EndRant It should work ...in theory |

What a old phone ![]() I own a camera so dont need a phone for that, i have a computer so dont need a phone for that, it still makes and receives calls so what more do i need? The earlier Nokia phones have a very good mono LCD display in them that will work with picaxe chips as a driver. They are basically a I2C display and can be written to direct from a picaxe, as well as graphics can be created on the screen to. So before you bin your old nokia's think about recycling them to a picaxe project or pass them onto someone who enjoys to dabble in electronics. Pete. Sometimes it just works |

I'm with you Pete, I only need a phone to be a phone. I didn't know the LCDs were I2C driven. I'll have to keep my old phones now. I'd like a dot matrix display for a home automation system, little LCDs on standard Clipsal wall plates. Cheap and plentyful ![]() sPuDd.. It should work ...in theory |

Hi sPuDd They are a right bugger to connect onto as most have the conductive rubber segment between the pcb and display. You can chop the original pcb off and use it, but the through holes you need to connect to are tiny and only allow 1 strand of wire. I made up my own pcb for the display to mount onto. If you are interested in having a fiddle with using an nokia display, i will post some information when i find the time. It was covered in a issue of Silicon Chip way back, when they actually had a magazine worth buying. I think the model you posted might have the metal tags on the display and are the Gem of the old nokia's displays for this reason. Pete. Sometimes it just works |

You know what I just realised? This new phone has 16 Gigs of RAM. My first real computer, a Microbee ( well I did have a Vic20 before that, but it wasn't a real computer ), had 16 k of RAM. My phone has a million times the RAM of my first computer! ![]() The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is right now. JAQ |

I know someone with a HTC Desire, tried to use it to access several DVR's via the web browser, but the browser does not support the activeX plug-in that most DVR's use. In fact only Internet Explorer supports it, or sometimes the others with a bunch of patches and band-aids. I think I'll wait till XP comes out on a micro sized dooverlacky... sPuDd.. It should work ...in theory |
