A friend sent me an email of a phone scam thats going around Australia.
I had not heard of it before and do not know if is correct or not, but worth a read to be fore warned.

Please read below and pass on to your family & friends.

Got a call last night from an individual identifying himself as an Telstra Service technician who was conducting a test on our Telephone lines.
He stated that to complete the test I should touch nine(9),zero ( 0), hash (#) and then hang up. Luckily, I was suspicious and refused.
Upon contacting the telephone company, I was informed that by pushing 90#, you give the requesting individual full access to your telephone line, which allows them to place long distance telephone calls billed to your home phone number.
I was further informed that this scam has been originating from many of the local gaols/prisons.
DO NOT press 90# for ANYONE. PLEASE pass this on to your friends.
If you have mailing lists and/or newsletters from organizations you are connected with, I encourage you to pass this on.

Hi Pete

This is correct as this scam has been around for a while, there are various number combination's that do different things, so if anybody asks you to dial an sequence of numbers, don;t do it. My info came from a telecom tech a friend of mine.

All the best

Could this be initiated by someone with a phone handset and some clip leads, if it was this simple?

Hi Gordon

I believe it could be as the telstra linesmen use these contacts to do a two way check on your lines,my friend told me that they have several code numbers they can use to check your line and the computer exchange connections in both directions.

All the best
