Lake Michigan; Copied from an E-Mail, Note; The great lakes in North America are fresh Water and are quick to form Ice.---Roe

ICEBERG PICTURES FROM LAKE MICHIGAN
Amazing striped icebergs
Icebergs in Lake Michigan sometimes have stripes, formed by layers of snow that react to different conditions. Blue stripes are often created when a crevice in the ice sheet fills up with melt water and freezes so quickly that no bubbles form.

When an iceberg falls into the lake, a layer of water can freeze to the underside. If this is rich in algae, it can form a green stripe. Brown, black and yellow lines are caused by sediment, picked up when the ice sheet grinds downhill towards the lake.

WAVES FROZEN IN MOTION Then tilted and elevated when the chunk of Ice settled to its center of gravity

My mom (87) sent me this same email and in mine, there was a fellow standing up next to one, but the shot was taken from far enough away that one could see the frozen "wave" behind him had to be 40 to 50 feet tall.

Do waves actually get that large on the great lakes or was this caused by frost wedging, if you know?

Hi Mac;
You have heard of the "EDMUND FITZGERALD" Iron Ore boat that sank in a storm on the Lakes, It was Lake Huron or Superior, don't know. this was one huge ship and built to handle the storms??? Titanic all over again.
I don't know how large they get but they are fearsome.!

I will take a guess about how the waves were trapped in such awkward positions.
I believe the ice chunks on the hillside broke off and slid at high speed into the lake causing a large wave from impact. The Ice would submerge and re surface
bringing several tons of water on top of it as the water starts to pour off the ice, its temperature on the brink of freezing with the ambient Temp. perhaps as low as -35F. it would freeze a shell around the Wave and hold it till the rest become solid. When the ice finds its center of gravity the ice wave is held as it was created in all sorts of un natural positions.
I believe we have at least one forum member who lives in Michigan, perhaps an answer is coming.?
It still doesn't seem possible to freeze a wave in motion.????---Roe

I have had second thoughts about the ice waves, they are not waves, but were formed by waves before the Lake surface froze, it is much easier to imagine storm waves thrashing
against the shore line slowly building a huge Icicle that will break loose from shore and go where the wild goose goes.--roe

Hi Bruce t

Thanks for that admonition as i was thinking of using some colored ice in my whiskey.

At the moment i keep it in the freezer so its cold and that conserves water.
