Is this what we will be seeing in the future, from what we see now, it seems possible.

Call me paranoid but I can see Big Bro spying on everyone through the "backdoor" that the manufacturers must put into these things. Hackers too will then crack in your life "virtually" and the next thing you will see is your family on the latest internet porno hit, along with all your private data.
By the way, did you notice that the wife got into bed at the end of the clip on the opposite side to the one she was on at the beginning of the clip? I don't know of any couple who swap sides. One always has "their" side and will always sleep on that side.
After all that, it does look impressive.

Hi Grub

I believe you are correct that if this does ever get into general use it will be a tool of big brother, while it looks impressive, it could be very intrusive.

I am afraid that technology is way in front of this silly old bugger, I am flat out working the TV remote doover.

Hi Shawn

I like my wood furniture too, it has character and feel not like the chipboard and plastic rubbish the sell everyone now. With the recent wet weather we had here the only thing I threw out was a chipboard cupboard that got its feet wet and fell to bits, all the wood stuff is as good as it ever was.

All the best

Indeed Grub,

I revere my private time on the crapper, last thing I want is the mirror telling me that I had better enjoy the next three minutes, as the rest of my day is gonna look a lot like what I'm about to flush away.

Hi guys,

I like very much that tech. But until then, it seems that the present doesn't want to cooperate . See here:
Altium relocates from Sidney to Shanghai

Quote from comments:
I just hope the old developers get together and restart the spirit of Protel in a new Australian EDA company. ASAP!
I sustain this, Australia have brilliant engineers.
Anyway, having only a pair of software for electronic schematic and PCB you can't gain a good percent from the market as long as here are very good open source packages as KiCAD. You need also strong simulation modules - anything Altium has. But having a small and competent team these days, you can resist longer than bigger companies.Edited by vasi 2011-04-10

Touch may be the craze right now, but it's not going to dominate. Sure touch UIs are great and intuitive, but they just don't work on everything. The part where the guy got up and went to the tellie had me laughing. Why would I do that when there's a remote?

They dominate on smartphones and tablets (and I would not want anything else on a tablet - maybe also a real keyboard if it is a development tablet, but definitely the display must have multi-touch). It is a great solution also for public terminals and maybe for automotive.

But I see there a very dangerous downside. Many of them must have Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and other radio solutions and this mean living in a constant electron bombardment.

So, for your apartment, better to have wired and "multiple points" optical connections.

I think Steve Jobs said it best at his last keynote speech. Although I hate his guts, he did have a point when explaining why touch was too inconvenient for laptops.

“We’ve done tons of user testing on this,” Steve Jobs said in Wednesday’s press conference, “and it turns out it doesn’t work. Touch surfaces don’t want to be vertical. It gives great demo, but after a short period of time you start to fatigue, and after an extended period of time, your arm wants to fall off."
~SJobs

For large televisions for example, I don't think touch would be useful. Too much effort to wave around your arms back and forth.

Yeah I'm undecided on touch tablets, you cant beat a mouse and keyboard. I think it will be like 3D tv, a fad for a few years then forgotten and we'll look back and wonder what we were thinking I dont have a tablet and would rather a Netbook anyway.

I do have a iphone, but find it frustrating at times, it tries to be too smart. And you cant feel where to press. On my old phone, when it rang you could feel the answer button and take the call without looking at it. Not so with the iphone, it needs your full attention to do simple tasks. I will probably be looking at something else when it needs replacing, besides Apple dont appear to have a social conscience from what I've read.

I wont use public touch screens, yuk, you seen the build up of finger makes on those things!

Buttons, I like buttons

Hi Glenn

I agree on the lack of feel from one of these touch screen things, I can more than enough mistakes with a normal keyboard without a mini finger set up touch screen, I bought one and tried it and found it was an expensive waste of time as it did what it wanted to do, not what I wanted it to do.

Good point on the public use touch screens also as the gunk from users is alive and well waiting to take you down.

All the best

Well. I would like a device like this one, with both keyboard and a touch screen, good for developers:

Fujitsu TH w500

Intel Oak Trail-based Atom Z670 processor
1.5 GHz clock speed
1 GB of RAM
120 GB hard drive (4200 RPM, though!)
10.1 inch screen displaying a 1024×600 pixel resolution
Wi-Fi
Bluetooth 3.0

Delivered with Windows but I think an Android (and a MeeGo Linux) is also possible to stick inside...
Bluetooth is a must to communicate with our microcontroller gadgets.

The best advantage a tablet have against a laptop is the absence of heat - the worst enemy of notebooks in my opinion...

I don't know if this is the case for the tablet above but the ones with sd-cards have no problems with the heat. But at least, is the case for Asus eeePC 701.

That would be spectacular to see. The technology's already there, just hasn't matured yet. I even remember reading about a virtual keyboard lit up by a laser device. Pretty nifty stuff.

Moving parts like HDDs typically translate to heat. Same goes for most GPUs.

yikes!
with the right chip installed in our heads,
we can do all of that stuff with out the help of Corning.
big brother could just projects it onto the inside of our skulls!
and who's going to wipe up all the finger prints on all those glass surfaces.

but it does look less stressful than the post apocalyptic,
huddle by the fire cannibalism scenario.

always the optimist :))
