HI all, Here is a link to some ancient Horsepower, And Note How quickly this order was filled. A job of design and build it on this scale today would take years and $millions$!!!! Perhaps I've exaggerated somewhat?. Built to do a JOB, UH HUH !! This link is for TREV., course he's seen it before.Detroit Electric, nearly as efficient as now. And one for Bob and Mac46,You wanna pull somethin There are Other interesting items in this Museum of pioneer Machinery Cheers-----Roe PS. BTW My username Greenbelt for those who may question, has nothing to do with Karate, A greenbelt is a stand of Timber on the perimeter of a harvested Forest. This is a Habitat for Birds and wild things and also to hide bald Hills and Mountains. Time has proven that I am blind to the Obvious, some of the above may be True? |

Yeah I agree Vasi, I think steam will have a place in the future. The other day I was talking to my younger brother and he thought steam trains were too slow so they replaced them with diesel electric. When I told him they could do 160kmh he didn't believe me, so I showed him a couple of youtube links. This one is a restored stream liner doing about 120kmh. I read somewhere the Flying Scotsman would regularly do 160kmh ( 100mph ) when it was running late. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmMvwoksG3E http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFTphTnv2Q8&feature=related Its great to see these things running, and we should be careful to keep the technology alive. What modern day vehicle can run on a cut down tree! I like this example of steam power, a steam powered plane. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nw6NFmcnW-8 Glenn The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is right now. Hi greenbelt Thanks for the link, my dad used to drive one of these plowing around 1930 until it was replaced by a Fordson tractor in 1938, and I drove that in 1949 sitting on his lap. The good old days. I love steam engines as they sit and work quietly and have a real fascination to them. By the way do not stand still to long as with a name like that you may have a birds nest on your head. All the best Bob Foolin Around |

HI All, Thanks for the comments, Vasi, You could be right, there is a possibility that steam could power Many processes that are now using compressed air or gear motors to Stamp out parts, package goods, bottling and canning machines, Using Electric for discrete machinery is wasteful. A single electric boiler could provide the whole factory power needs in a lot of cases. I have seen a complete Machine shop powered by a single electric motor, a 20 hp. driving an overhead Idler shaft with sheaves and belts connected to each machine. This is a little over simplifying but a lot of changes can be made for economy. Glen, Thanks for the addition to the interest in this post, The link on that 1933 steam powered aircraft is awesome. That is one interesting Engine. EDIT; Did I see this or was it a Camera induced image, When the aircraft engine started, It ran backward, the pilot stopped the engine and then restarted this time in the correct direction. I have a very slow Modem and too lazy to download that clip again. end edit. Hi Bob, I wear a Hat with Barbs and thorns to discourage the Birds from nest building, But a new problem cropped up, The "Yellow Jackets," (Bees) find this attractive. My Dad too Had a Fordson Tractor, everywhere you looked was a 9" inch hole in the Ground. It was always Stuck. I guess He was loading it to heavy, I was 7 then. Greenbelt, Here's alittle triva, When the diesel/electric engines were put into service it took 2 of them to replace each steam engine...just did'nt have the pulling power. Also the diesel/electric took less people to maintain and operate,"the main reason behind bringing them into service". I've also learned that many of the modern passenger train schedules take more time to travel the same distance, than that of the 1910-1949 era steam powered passenger trains.( in the US). I enjoyed you'r post. .....Mac46 I'm just a farmer |
