Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

The forum will resize them for you. 500 wide for JPG's and 1000 wide for GIF's.

GIF's are good for circuit diagrams, etc, so thats why I set up the larger size.

I've also increased the max file size upload limit, so it should accept just about any photo you try to upload, unless its huge.

That sure sounds like an invitation to try to load a gigapixel image :)

Actually I've just found a little problem with image uploads. The new component I'm using to resize images and add the watermark isn't reducing the file size accordingly! I've disables image uploads for a short time while I sort it out.

I've turned image uploading back on, but the copyright watermark isn't working.

OK I think I've fixed it.

I was using a image resizing component ( ASPImage ) to resize the image and add the watermark. It seamed to be working fine, till I noticed I was getting a few errors when members tried to upload their avatar image. I fixed the problem and was looking at the uploaded avatar image when I noticed it still had the same file size as its original image. In other words, a 64 pixel wide image was the same file size as a 1000 pixel wide image! I looked further into it and noticed every file resized by the new component had the same file size as its unsized original. It looks like the component changes some information within the image to resize it in pixels, without actually resizing the image and reducing its file size.

Not happy!

So I've gone back to the original image resizing component. Its works well, the image pixels and file size is reduced, but it doesn't have the watermark ability. So I've changed the forum code to use both components, one to resize efficiently, and then the other to add the watermark. It was a bit fiddly, I was getting a few permission errors due to the fact one component hadn't cleaned up behind itself before the other component tried to do its bit, but all sorted now.

I've disabled avatar uploading for now, will get to fix that tomorrow.
