Been blowing all day, around the corner, or down on the street. I can see and hear the trees about 200m from my place getting blown around, loosing leaves. 30 to 50km winds locally.

My windmill has run once today, for a few minutes. The trees around my house are still. I have a fan running to keep me cool.

When I bought this place I asked the owner if there was good wind, he said there was. In hindsight, seriously, what would a average non windmill person know about wind! I should have done my research, looked at the lay of the land, prevailing winds, stuck a hanky on a pole, all that stuff.

I plan to move later this year, or soon after. Couple of reasons, my land is to steep to use, and no wind! Some may say its silly to considering moving house just for the sake of a hobby, but would you expect a sailer to live in the middle of a desert. Fact is, I like windmills, and I'll move house to find a place where I can sit and watch my windmill go round.

Its so frustrating to hear the wind blowing and see the trees swaying in the distance, while the trees and windmills near my home are motionless.

Next time, I'm going to take a wind speed meter and compass with me when I go looking at land for sale.

Whine finished.

Glenn, if "next time" is going to be anywhere near the coast it may help to look up the BOM weather sites. They have wind graphs for many coastal locations for every day of the year and averages as well.
I do use the site when going cruising on my trailer sailer.

Not as strange as it sounds. I chose first King Island and finally this island... primarily because of the 40's parallel and wind...

Bought a 70 acre block on King, and then discovered there was another island to the east called Flinders Island... much nicer and just as windy.....so bought a 400 acre block over here too. (since sold King Island).... wonderful stuff.

Good question Don.

In Mackay the winds are predominatly from 10 amp to 3pm. If I look at a new place between those times, and using the BOM's wind statistics for the area, I can compare my wind speed readings against the BOM's. The compas will also tell me where SE is, as most of the good wind comes from that direction. If I'm close to the average wind speed, and I have a clear view of the SE, I should be right.
My place now is on the north side slope of a hill, bad place for a windmill. It's my fault, I should have done the research.

High Glenn

You need one of those recording weather station things and put on a post near proposed property for a week because the wind will never blow when you want it to.

Gybersons law of wind.

They work good but are prone to lightning damage I think it sucks the smoke out, or maybee just sucks.
Got mine on ebay for 55 bucks but now dead no smoke

Hill top near the coast would be my choice but would need a runway to encourage winds.
