Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Hi Gizmo, the site has been flaky, and slow recently. I have to say today, it is amazingly fast. Keep the chin up, as you seem to have nailed it for the moment. Gordon. become more energy aware |

Yeah it looks like they have sorted out the problem. The forum will be down for a little time tomorrow while I make some changes. I get about 100 bogus registrations per day, so I'll make a few chages to the registration process for new members, and in future logging in will ask you for a simple image verification to stop brute force attacks. This will only happen if you try to log in from a different computer. Glenn The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is right now. JAQ |

Hi Gizmo, presumably, the preferences controls will be online soon. I am itching to fix the time stamp settings. The error 404 comes up a bit. BTW my PC can't remember passwords here anymore. Gordon. become more energy aware |

Yesterday when I tried to view the forum all I got was the 404 page. Also with the login remember, the electro-tech forum has just gone thru the same issue and I do suppose winblows will be the ultimate cause of the issue. As firefox is taking over there are reports that microsucks are trying to wrestle back the browser and that is the big issue. Cheers Bryan |

Why would Windows be the cause of the issue? Where can I find these reports of Microsoft wresting back the browser, and what exactly is the big issue? The problem at Web Central a couple of weeks ago was something called a SAN, made by IBM, and it dont run Windows. The problem over the last few days was caused by a brute force attack on another site, and brute force attacks are OS independant. Fact is this forum runs on a Microsoft Windows server, using a Microsoft Access database and Microsoft developed VB script as its code language. Because its such an easy language, I've been able to make changes to the forums code, adding features like the image resize, where other well known non-Microsoft based forums dont offer image resize and their forum administrators will just delete you big pictures and tell you to read the FAQ. I've also hard coded lists of IP's from suspect spammers in China and Russia to try and reduce the bogus membership applications. And I've also, from time to time, had to send private messages of appology to forum members who have been unfairly treated or "called names" on this site, because I believe you talk online like you would face to face. Whenever the site goes offline, through no fault of its own, I panic. In the last few weeks I've taken time off work to try and get the thing back up. So when someone bags Microsoft, on my Microsoft developed and served site, all I can suggest is they stop using Microsoft technology. If your reading this on you Linux based PC with your Firefox browser, then guess what, your using Microsoft technology. I second that Glenn, You have always kept a clean and professional site. Thankyou for that. On a server note - I notice the 'Active Topics' button thinks there is nothing new, but drop down the selection and pick 'Since Yesterday' and it finds all the recent posts. Not sure what part of the forum code that lives in... A greatful sPuDd.. It should work ...in theory |

Thanks Spudd. The site has actually moved to a new location, which is why the Active Topics is a bit confused. It's now on a virtual server of its own, so I have full control of the OS and can keep a better eye on things. No more shared servers or SAN's for me, these things that are supposed to increase reliability actually do the opposite from what I've expierenced over the last few weeks. The time zone is also back to GMT + 10 ( Eastern Australia ). Glenn The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is right now. JAQ |

Job well done! This Web site rocks! I have a Web site with an interactive blog, but it's nothing like this site. I too have had to deal with the Cialis and Viagra crew; they're brutal, but not invincible! Is there a way for forum members to list their private email addresses or is that a can of worms? I am a forum member of GardenWeb and as such both my email address and Web site URL are listed as part of registration. It's handy when you want to ask a stupid question (and we all have one from time to time). Then again, it pulls traffic away from the forum, so I suppose that's why it's not offered, eh? Keep up the good work; you're Web site is like a tall glass of iced tea on a dry day! Edit: RE: "It's handy when you want to ask a stupid question (and we all have one from time to time). " (from above) See there, "Stupid is as stupid does!" Thank you Forest Gump and ain't it the truth. No sooner had I pushed "Post" than I pushed some other button (Profile?) and answered my own question. Gosh, at 60 you'd think I'd have more sense! Sorry folks! Nothing difficult is ever easy! Perhaps better stated in the words of Morgan Freeman, "Where there is no struggle, there is no progress!" Copeville, Texas |

If you like spam go for it. There is already a way to do this in settings -> forum preferences -> show email address. If you don't like spam embed it in a picture and then you will only be spammed if a human chooses to spam you with any luck or if they store/use your email in an insecure way. |
