Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Today the site has been hammered by a couple of IP's originating in China. The site is safe, the code wont let them get in, but its really starting to piss me off. I get an email for every failed attempt, about 200 per hour. I would like to block the entire China IP range, but I do have contacts in China that read the forum, so that means I just need to block the individual IP's as they show up.

What they are trying to do is register as forum members, so they can then post messages for mobile phones, viagra, that sort of stuff. But the software they use to automatically register is preditable, and I've changed the code to reject them and notify me. The problem is it slows down the site and fills my inbox. If the IP was based in Australia I can contact the police, but thats not going to help with oversea's attacks.

Arghhhh!

Well, at least you have the technology and skills to reject the attack. Sheltering behind armour that is being strafed by auto fire still sounds bad, but being hit is much worse

I'm sure there are other sites/forums now that are suffering because their admin has not been so security conscious. You do a top job Gizmo, and we love ya for it mate!

How about after 3 failed registrations an ip is automatically blocked for a given time. After 3 ips are blocked at one time a whole range is blocked. 3 ranges blocked the whole country is blocked with an error page stating why and that is only served to the country in question. And so on...Edited by Robb 2009-05-26

Now thats a good idea Robb. I'm starting to narrow down a few IP ranges, and blocking those, but this also blocks anyone in these regions who wants to read the forums. I think your way is much smarter, write a script to track and block IP's when they are obviously just spamming the forum. I'll also write the script to unblock them a few days later.

I have a hydroponics Web site (www.tengreenthumbs.com) and was
hammered with the same crap. The ONLY way I could find around it was
to make folks "register" before posting.

Doing that cured the Viagra and Cialis crew's efforts, but it also cut down
on my traffic. Seems most folks want 'instant' instant-gratification and
are not willing to do anything beyond even a nominal effort before
moving on. I get lots of click-throughs though!

Such is life. I'll be putting up an alternative-energy Web site soon if for
no other reason than to prove I'm not crazy. All the forum claims I make
are true, but most of the "toys" have been long-since dismantled.

I'm from the time when there was no reason to take pictures and digital
cameras (or anything else digital for that matter) weren't even a twinkle of
a dream yet. Everything I've told about on this forum was once a hands-
on reality, though I know some don't believe.

The new Web site will clear up all the nay-sayers' questions. I will offer
all the stuff for free, but will also offer detailed plans, CDs and custom-
made "parts" for those who don't own a lathe or mill at a nominal cost.
I'm looking forward to doing it as a "retirement" job as I'm swiftly
approaching that chapter in my life.

First up will be a compressed-air engine / generator set that can be hand
built with a screwdriver and an electric drill (this is the part where some
folks might want a little hired help).

Gizmo: email me from my Web site Contact and I'll share with you some
other secrets my son and I used to shed the spammers. From my Web
site on the presentation page, click on "It Happens", you'll see what I
mean.

Glenn,

Good to read you have set up your own "Great Firewall". It has been claimed in "The Australian", that China is conducting 10,000 cyber attacks per day; mainly espionage against oil companies, etc.

May the wombs of all the hacker's women dry up!
