Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Hi Gizmo,

The issue of sizing of pictures in threads has risen again. I have just tried to view a thread with a wide GIF or whatever picture of a cct embedded in the thread. I have given up.

Can I suggest that any picture of this type be added as a link only. The file with the picture will be stored normally somewhere within the forum pages, but to view the image the link is selected. this avoids corruption of the width of the thread to the obscenely wide format that is almost unreadable on a laptop.

This problem cropped up in the past, and is still a problem. My eyes glaze over when I have to try and navigate the scratch pad of my laptop for the up and down scrolling as well as the side to side, that is needed for all subsequnt posts to the offending picture.

I am all for clarity of some pictures, but it would be easier to just click a link to the big picture.

Gordon.

Gordon, I use a laptop too but relegated the scratch pad for the few occasions when I travel with the laptop.
Most of the time I use a wireless mouse with it. Side to side scrolling is still a pain with that but not as much as on a scratch pad.

Yeah I agree with Tinker about the touchpad, I hate them, they are so slow compared to a mouse. I'm pretty quick with a mouse, a result of too many hours playing Doom and Quake. I have a small mouse with a shortened lead I carry in my laptop case, and only use the touchpad when I dont have a flat surface to work on.

Gordon can you point me to the posting with the large gif, maybe it slipped past the resize routine. Gifs are resized to 1000 pixels wide, maybe I could drop them to 800 pixels without loosing too much detail.

It's the little 45k and 27k gif I put in here: http://www.thebackshed.com/Windmill/FORUM1/forum_posts.asp?T ID=1830&PN=1

The original uploaded files are: 46KB (46563 bytes) and 27KB (27608 bytes)

The forum has resized them to 135kb and 72kb files??????? and 611px x 1000px....

I can delete them if necessary, although I think they are more useful displayed badly than not at all

Hey Oz do you remember what the original width of your images were?

1392x850 for both.
I had assumed they would be resized by your software (as mentioned previously somewhere else.)
I didn't think they would be larger files, and that there was resizing software in here to bring them down to forum px.

I don't know how readable they will be in a smaller format... may play with them perhaps.

If I we do resize them, will that reformat the thread??

The original file may have had less colours, 16, compared to the new files 256 colours as default. I'll see if I can play around with that.

If I change the resize to 800 for gifs, it will only affect images in the future, not images uploaded in the past.

Above is a large picture embedded in a thread.

Below is probably a better way to show this same information.

large picture to display

This was easily uploaded in the normal way. The file appears at the end of the users profile, list of uploades. The picture was opened by clicking on the link and then added as a link in the users news posting in a simple way. The link even allows a zoom function, without affecting the normal thread layout functioning.

My thoughts on this seemingly difficult to impliment task.

Gordon.

Just a quick message to let everyone know I'm looking into software solutions for this problem. While linking to a image is straight foward, fact is a lot of people will find it painfull and would rather not upload a picture at all.

I think the inclusion of images with the text makes a better looking forum.

So, what can I do.

I can use a little java to detect the browser window size, and if its too small to correctly display 1000 pixel wide images, resize the image down to 500 pixels wide. I hate java.

Or I can add an option in the user preferences to keep images less than 500 pixels wide, or not display images at all, easier for me as my native language is VB.

Either way, it will have to wait for now. But it will happen.

I think the stories look and feel better with the pictures displayed...

pdf's and other undisplayed images give me the irrits, and I tend to not open them unless I have a serious interest in them... probably my loss

I think many would agree that it is not a problem with .jpg type pictures. The wider .gif would be better viewed with a link. These are usually ccts etc, that would be OK if linked to, or add a link under a .jpg, to the bigger picture.
