Has anyone noticed McDonalds doing major refits at its stores?

Namely the groups of 4 50W Halogen downlights everywhere.

It makes me sick!

Bairnsdale McDonalds (as smallish store) I counted 200 bulbs.

Apart from the fact they are always blowing 50W x 200 is 10KW and they are running at least 14hrs a day.
thats a staggering 140Kw/hr day on lights alone....

Best bit... a fillament bulb wastes 80% of its energy in heat so now you need to reverse cycle aircon the heat out again!!!!!!

Write to your local McD's and tell em to install 240V 13W fluro downlights instead.

Hi Karl,

the CF option gives an inferior light atmosphere, but there would be an LED option. Power would be approx 1/5 of the Halogens. Still a mind blowing amount of power.

Take away is stil very expensive and this is one of the reasons.

cave man likes light the same colour as fire.....

this is why yellow light is more appealing to some.

I would bet MacDonald's spent a bundle on consultants in mood lighting. They would have picked colours that made customers relax and the food look good. A warm red shifted light is very comforting, Like KarlJ suggests, maybe its a race memory of the days we spent sitting around the fire cooking mammoth.

I don't think the cost of running the lights would have been considered, unfortunately.

Someone should come up with a light bulb made to run on sugar. MacDonald's would jump at that for sure.

Was shoping at the super market and noted the newly installed frozen goods freezers were lit with LEDs. The units had PIR sensors on the top too. Not sure what they do. When I opened the door the LEDs in the door frames came on each side of the door I opened.

So some are learning. I bet its all profit driven but they are learning.Edited by Robb 2009-12-21

good idea, after all they're normally lit with fluros, which cant be good as the 36W fluro takes almost twice that to drive, waste in the transformers i believe.
