Friends,

Oil change on a Toyota Corolla 2010. Where is the oil filter as one is looking for a spin-on type oil filter? Not there, so I google: "Where is Corolla oil filter?" 1.8 million hits. Suspected it is hidden under a plastic cap next to the pan. Yes, it is there and it is a cartridge-type filter.

Lots of angry Americans complaining about the plastic cap on Google, which is very hard to get off and is supposed to be torqued back on at 25 Newtonmeters. The oil filter wrenches are all too big and do not fit into the small gap between the pan and the cap. Yota will sell you a special tool for US$35 or US$65!!! So one has to buy a wrench with a metal band or similar or use an old serrated fan belt and lots of torque.

One angry Yank wrote to Toyota as one has to suspect the change from spin-on to cartridge is just a scam to stop people from doing their own service. Yota's answer:

"A TWO-COMPONENT SPIN-ON CANNOT BE RECYCLED, BESIDES WE SAVE WEIGHT WITH THIS PLASTIC CAP AND THE PAPER CARTRIDGE CAN HAVE THE OIL SQUEEZED OUT AND THE PAPER RECYCLED"??

Can anyone see a japanese worker or machine squeezing out the oil for recycling?

Owners tried to get the cap off without tools with a band around the 65 mm cap have broken the cap and forgetting to oil the O-ring and metal mating surface has led to a broken cap and loss of oil. Lots of complaints! Users are suggesting to Yota to add a hex head to the cap, so a spanner can take the cap off.

User manual does not state the location of the oil filter and the service manual does not state the cleaning of the air filter after 10,000 km. I suspect the modern cars all measure the air flow via the sensor above the filter and only blow it out if the attached computer during the service suggests a clean. However, the air cleaner to the aircon is to be cleaned, I know there is no sensor there!

Food for thought!

I have to agree car manufacturers are trying to take the home mechanic out of the picture. Long gone are the days we could fix a broken down car with a few tools and whatever fencing wire or drink cans we could find on the side of the road. I've built and modified many car motors over the years, right down to head porting and conrod ballancing, but if my current car, a 2006 model, has a problem, I need to take it to someone else

Its a sign of the times Dom.
