Autodesk has acquired instructables.com . Weird move to me. I think they concluded that they will gain some fresh interest in their products if they activate in some social online environments...a technical one, of course. But... is a DIY zone... the people from that area don't have so much money to spent... Well, it may be something like, "Hey I also have Arduino!
Here’s Carl Bass, Autodesk’s CEO, talking more about his vision for the future of DIY.
http://youtu.be/VqMjZfuYifY So, this is their idea of DIY? I'm not sure I understood right! THAT is still DIY? Consisting in me, taking photos on the object I want, and upload to them, get a 3D data file.... and here I'm lost... they deliver only the 3D data, or also the 3D object? What is my part? Only taking pictures and deciding which material? And they making it for me? Where is my DIY part? Who is the trick here? Hope I understood wrong! arn't they providing a hobbiest grade cad package(A123 or something)? That lets you design simple 3d objects. Then if you want to you can get them to manufacture the 3d object to your specification. I figure its kind of like eMachineshop (whos cad package I quite like for simple things). They want in on the diy/maker scene and instructables has lots of stuff in that sphere. |

Ok, but is less DIY than making/using your 3D printer... I guess this is also a good business (something like ordering PCBs) but look at them how big they were and what they are doing now... As a DIY-er, I try to exclude others from my scheme to obtain lower costs but I understand that DIY is not always the same with poorer (or making things just because is cheaper that way). Is quite opposite when is about a hobby ![]() About hobby packages, Discreet had gmax1.2 for free, now is property of another company but is still free (you have to register it) and someone developed a CAM plug-in for it (CNC Toolkit <-- the URL is just a starting point in gathering all the pieces of the puzzle). For helping others to get all the tools from that "equation" I'm posting the links: gmax1.2 - take all you need from there, including the help and tutorials; gmax registration page - without it, gmax executable is useless... some useful gmax plugins as gears...
