Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

This was sent to me by a friend, interresting idea. I dont know where they get their watt figures, but I can tell you any screen draws more power on whate than black.

"For those worried with energy consumption and all its downsides. When your screen is white, being it an empty word page, or the Google page, your computer consumes 74 watts, and when its black it consumes only 59 watts. Mark Ontkush wrote an article about the energy saving that would be achieved if Google had a black screen, taking in account the huge number of page views, according to his calculations, 750 mega watts/hour per year would be saved.

In a response to this article Google created a black version of its search engine, called Blackle, with the exact same functions as the white version, but with lower energy consumption, check it out.

Sorry to contradict you, Glenn..... but

I have tested this with various of my LCD monitors and cannot measure any difference with all-black vs all-white display.

I cannot discern any difference in the power my computer (as a whole, without the monitor) consumes under the same conditions, although I can certainly measure an increase in consumption for pages that have active crap (like all those javascript doodles, snow-storms and similar processor-intensive things, even some animated GIFs).

This argument would hold water if everyone were still using glass CRT monitors, but cripes, how many still do? And for how much longer?

The power saved would be easily made up if people put their screens "to sleep" when not used for a short period (and certainly disabling those insanely wasteful animated screen-savers that use even more power making the CPU huff and puff!)

When a LCD monitor have the backlight on, is on maximal consumption. Does not mater if pixels are set white or black (of course on all white, are more transistors on and a little more consumption). Only with backlight off (true sleep mode and monitor start cooling) consumes around 6Watt/hour.

I have 3 computers up and running and all have crt monitors. They may use more power but for the price of replacing them with lcds I can pay the extra money on my electric bill for years. Someday when the time comes to replace them I will look at the options. Personally I would rather use the old stuff already here if possible than have the cost of throwing away working items and replacing them with new on my eco bill.

Plus I am hoping for 3d holographic to show up before I die.
