I was cruising through a swap meet today and came across this treadmill motor.

It's made by Shinn Fu Corp.

  • Catalog No. S0200
  • Listing: SF98000778
  • HP: 4
  • RPM 4300
  • Rotation: C.C.W
  • Field: PM
  • Volts 200 DC

At a slow hand crank I am getting 12v from it - no cogging. It appears I could use it as it is. It has 4 huge magnets set in pairs. Is there room for improvement here? BTW...I paid $5

Good find Greg.

These motors are popular for wind generators. As its a brush DC motor, there are a couple of things to remember.

1. Brushes will wear out in time and need to be replaced every year or so.

2. Make sure you put a diode in series with the output, or your windmill will turn into a big fan and drain you batteries.

Other than that, it will make a good little windmill.

Thanks for reminding me about the diode Glenn.

Chris: this is purely a chance find. It was a HotRod/Collectors car swap meet. Many of the store holders treat it as a flea market.

I had been looking into these treadmill motors about six weeks ago, but the price $$$. Couldn't see any on AUS eBay, but USA eBay had them 1 1/2 - 2 1/2 HP, 100v - 130v. Once again, the $$$ was to much, especially when you add shipping.

I was also looking into DC starter motors for ride-on mowers - many have DC PM motors. There around $100.
