I found this little amplifier the other week, and it is remarkably cheap. I would not read too much into the 80W power rating per channel - more likely 5W RMS or so I would think. But this is plenty for a bedroom setup, with speakers either side of the bed, and a passive sub sitting in the cupboard. If you WANT the HT arrangement, that's fine. This is just for a simple sound setup for a bedroom though. I have my mediaplayer PC connected to this, and the video goes(via HDMI) to the projector, but this thing does the sound. PERFECT as a bedroom setup, for watching TV/Videos/Movies etc at night before sleep. CERTAINLY not as good a a full HT setup, but for basic and cheap sound for the bedroom.... I liked it so much, I bought a couple more to keep in storage, for use when the first one fails at some point. It comes with a power-pack thing, but I binned that immediately, and replaced it with one from Jaycar so I know I am using a supply that won't go on fire. I seem to recall cracking open the power-supply that came with it, and it was as you would expect from the price, it was pretty horrible in there, so - bin material. Very clean sound - not saturated in hiss, so it's also good for low-volume listening to sleep-aid sounds too, such as rain on a tin-roof, which is my favourite sound to go to sleep with, if I am having problems sleeping. It would be even more interesting if it had a compression control. I am sick of TV shows that have very high dynamic range, going from whispering to deafening music. Doesn't suit my hearing at all! VK7JH MMedit |

My mediaplayer runs old Win8pro, but it does not connect to the internet. It is Ethernet between the server and it(plus a network switch), and I run Breakaway Audio Enhancer on this machine, to squish/expand the audio on demand, and it works really well. LINK... Trial version is free, but it does cost you a small license fee if you want to use it permanently. (US$30) The difference it can make is astounding, so it is well worth the thirty bucks, IMHO. EDIT: It appears from the comments, that it is problematic to run this on W11, but for any other EARLIER version of Windoze, it's fine. I've run it on both Win8pro and W10 without issues. Another thing to add to the W11 "No, you WON'T do or run that!" list.... Edited 2025-12-07 14:09 by Grogster Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops! |

I used DeskFX audio enhancer for a while but really prefer a hardware solution. The amp you found will get the audio out of HDMI for me and, with a bit of luck, I might be able to tap into the audio stream. My TVs have a few audio presets but none do compression. VK7JH MMedit |
