Hey Folks, I would imagine this question has been asked before, I have looked all over the net and can not find an answer. I have stopped thinking about any of the crap on ebay and plan to build a alt. from scratch. I will use either 18 or 20 gauge wire and I think around a 100 turns. And I will make 12 coils, so can anyone tell me how much wire to buy. Will 1/2 pd do or should I get a pound? Also the turbine is 5 foot, would I be safe to build a eight inch setup or could I go to ten? Here is a shot of my blade design. I welcome any remarks.

Hi, welcome to the Forum.
Your question is difficult to answer, you must come up with a coil diameter that will
match your magnet shape, square round,etc. and its size, 1", 1 1/2", 2", ??? .

An example; Coil is rectangle measuring 7/8" x 1 1/2 inside. the distance around the coil form is 2 x 7/8" = 14/8 this would be 1 3/4 " and 2 x 1 1/2" is 3"
so 1 3/4 + 3 = 4 3/4" the total distance around the form. The distance will grow as layers of turns build up. should allow 5 1/2-6" per turn depending on whether you use
18 or 20 gage wire. 100 turns = 600 inches divide by 12 = 50 feet per coil x 12 coils =
600 feet total. Now Measure your mag's and find your wire requirements.
I don't know what you are asking about 8" 10" setup?

Hey Roe, thank you for the answers. The question was based on the blades you see in the posting, could I get by with 8 or 10 stater and rotor. I live in a area of low to mild winds.
