Hi,

My tractor battery of the Fiat 650 (65 HP) is surely suffering as I only have a 10A charger and I am not using it for six weeks at a time; batt. is 143Ahr and should probably be charged at more than 10A. Alternator can charge at 2200 RPM with about 600W. The batt. is old and I am trying to breath some life into it. The charger never switches off, even after all-night charging and stays at about 2Amps in the morning.

Q1.: Do I get bulk charging during driving as I am probably not getting enough Amps into the batt. from the 10A charger? But 600W/12V = 50 Amps, that does seem to be enough?

My free gift, the $1,500 Victron charger/inverter (24V/3000/70A - 16A) from the scrap yard seems to be dead but has two massive 14.6V/25A toroids, which I have removed.

Q2.: Is it possible to avoid having to buy a new batt. by adding a rectifier to the toroid and so building a cheap higher-Amp charger or is this most likely just one of my many crazy ideas?

You can use a inverter welder as a charger. Just make sure you connect the electrodes to the battery before turning the welder on. You will need to manually watch it of course.
