Just a quick sanity check question.

If using a DC motor as a generator it should output DC (rather than AC). Therefore there is no need to rectify the current before it goes to the battery?

Also what would happen to DC if you did run it through a rectifier - does it have any effect?

cheers
My middle name is luck mind you my first is bad!

yes, you will get DC.

If you run it through a rectifier you will lose a bit of voltage due to the diode drop. Around 1.5V due to there being two diodes conducting. But it won't break.

Use 1 diode or it will "motor" when the wind drops.

Good point Rob.
