How cool is that!!!!!! Great review to. Thanks to all those who emailed him suggesting he have a look at a Maximite. Glenn. The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is right now. JAQ |

Great stuff!!! I'm actually a subscriber to him, but I have not checked any of my sub's vids for a while - Christmas and all that got in the way. We need to send him a MicroMite+ or MicroMite Extreme unit to play with. Great as the CMM is, it is several years old now, and the MMBASIC for the MM+ series(and even the MM2) is far more advanced then the CMM MMBASIC. Not to speak negatively of his video - it was FANTASTIC to see a bigger channel like his, talk about the MM. NOW perhaps Dave of EEVBLOG fame?........ Smoke makes things work. He did a great job. I can understand why he focused on the Maximite - he came from a Commodore 64 background and the Maximite is close to that while the Micromite is more a controller, which he acknowledged is not his forte. Despite being a few years old the Maximite is still great as a BASIC computer like the TRS-80, etc. I have plans to upgrade the Maximite with features from the Micromite including integers, constants, etc but it is a long term goal (DOS MMBasic was a step on that road). That would be risky Couple weeks ago Dave did one of his mail bag posts, someone had sent him a servo controller and motor built around a cheap 3 phase model airplane motor and a encoder. Basically you end up with a 1kW+ servo motor for under $200! Brilliant, a cheap servo motor option ( like for CNC, like stepper motors but faster and better ). Problem was, Dave had no idea what it was, and really mocked it. He wondered why the encoder was needed! I was yelling at the screen "Dave, its a servo motor!" I still think the Maximite Color is a beter alternative for 80's style desktop computer, hence a good candiate to use instead of an old 8-bit system. VGA, Keyboard is easy to use and for games you have SPRITES! It could profit from some of the statements/functions that were added to the uMite but not to the Maximite. The uMite is much better for embedded projects. Especially because of the LCD support. The 8-bit guy is probably not so interested in embedded systems (32 bit:) ) Microblocks. Build with logic. |

Yes please, can't wait My Maximite has been running 24/7 (apart from the odd power blackout) for three plus years now. It just works... Would love to see support for a humidity sensor. Busa |

the video was a great showcase one of the major innovations with the micromite (in my opinion!) was having basic programs running directly from flash. is this something that may be on the maximite horizon? is it something that can be done when the running program is sitting on an SD card? i'd love to see a low-cost maximite kitset available, using a far cheaper case than the original, and a 1455 replacing the pic32's onboard USB port. but then, could this ever be cheaper than a RPi running mmbasic? cheers, rob :-) |

That are good news! Includes that CFunctions also? That would be a step to get new life into the Maximites I think. Regards Michael causality ≠ correlation ≠ coincidence |

I am not sure about running from flash. The MX170/470's flash has a high endurance but the chip used in the Maximite can only take 1000 write cycles. Maybe the program could be transferred to flash after debugging but that just makes everything more complicated. Running a program from the SD card is also problematic. Speed would be the issue there. Geoff Geoff Graham - http://geoffg.net |

Maybe an alternative could be a serial flash chip. They are small and cheap and could function as a storage device to save a program. It could then also automatically load from it. Microblocks. Build with logic. |

Can one easily be retro-fitted to a (Colour) Maximite, though? John |

Agree with this. Jean beat me to it Pete M did some work on the W25Q32FVSIG 32mbit (4mbyte) Flash Memory just recently - maybe this could be incorporated in the updated maximite core? |

You make a good point there. I suppose the CMM is a one-stop-shop for people wanting to tinker with things. Had not thought about it QUITE like that before you pointed it out, so I stand corrected. ![]() Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops! |

This guy must be popular. Visitors to my website jumped from 300 to 400 per day to 2,000 per day. It is trailing off now but that is a lot of people. Geoff Graham - http://geoffg.net |

i wonder if rob (CircuitGizmos) has seen any rush on maximite orders as a result? who still supplies maximites (or variations thereof) these days? could it be time for one of us to redesign the PCB to fit in a cheap 100x100mm PCB format? geoff: it is a shame the mx695 has such low flash endurance. how about a "CMM mk2" using an MZ processor? cheers, rob :-) |

What does the CMM do which is important to people that I don't cover in the Micromite eXtreme if it was "repackaged" as a SBC? |

i've not really followed the MZ branch of micromite basic too closely, so i couldn't say. it could well be that with the appropriate options either preset or hard-coded it is equivalent in every important regard. do the MZ micromtes support graphic sprites? what VGA resolutions are available? as i recall, i did see mention of PS/2 keyboard support, going forward USB keyboard support may be starting to become important for an SBC. btw, i'm still also swaying between the (relatively high) cost of the MZ processor versus the cheapness of a RPi zero. not to mention the RPi supporting HDMI. cheers, rob :-) |
