Windoze 10 has started pestering me with ads all the time. This did not used to happen:

Anyone else seeing this?
How can you turn it OFF?
I get LOTS of them, and as soon as I close one, another mother-$%#!& shows up, so I have just started ignoring them, but they are REALLY pissing me off.

I note it says it is coming from Opera browser, so perhaps it is the culpret, but I have looked in the settings, and cannot find anything there that I need to disable to stop pop-up ads etc. Edited by Grogster 2019-07-04

Hmmm....

And windows 10 has just updated itself and changed the serial port number assignments on everyone of my serial ports
It will take ages to sort that lot out (I have over 25 serial port assignments both hardware and virtual)

bought a new computer for my daughter and upgraded the OS to win7 as she couldn't use the supplied win 10 due to it hanging 99% of the time. Now it just plain works....

You probably allowed by accident one of the visited websites (banggood.com) to send you desktop notifications.

They are really bad for that. They would bombard me with email promotions and I couldn't unsubscribe from my Android devices (gmail) but I was finally able to from my Windows machine.

I highly recommend Reboot Restore (free). Stuff only gets on my system when I want it to.

Been using this for years

Hi Grogs

I've noticed in Firefox (which is the only browser I use for several reasons) there will be a message popup which asks "do you want this web page to send you notifications?"
I always say NO & have no issues such as you are having...

Does it happen with a different browser?

Is there a way to make this popup not happen, since the answer is ALWAYS NO?

I've just started using 'pi-hole.'

https://pi-hole.net/

A standalone arduino powered gadget that blocks ads for all the devices on your network and sends request to the pi-hole.

Bit of a mammoth setup if you know nothing about linux etc, but cheap enough and seems to be working well.

When used with good old u-block origin I virtually never see any ads.

You windows ad pop up issue might well be easily blocked with a pi....

FYI: I'm using the following: ghostery

I've been using this for a long time - You can tell what trackers, cookies, and logging services are running on any site you visit. Blocks all or selected, never had a problem using in WIN 10-64.

I get every update / upgrade from MS for WIN10 and I have NEVER had advertising popups in windows, only in a browser, latest EDGE with Ghostery has no popups or MS advertising. Ghostery is available for most browsers. I also have another app that allows you to quickly turn off all MS-W10 feedback, "spying" for want of a better word.

In Firefox the "Block popup windows" is turned on by default, so the VERY OCCASIONAL notification questions are just that. These are not popup ads, they are a legitimate question about the use of the site.

A very good popup blocker as well as Ghostery as mentioned by KeepIS is an add-on called U-block Origin. This (is configurable) by default prevents material from other than the web site you are currently viewing from annoying you. It's a real eye-opener to see just how many "other sites" you get connected to from your primary connected site - it literally can be dozens of third party ad servers. All are potential extra security risks because any one of these can be compromised with bad stuff. (Use Telstra.com.au as an example to see how many other sites are being accessed - & you thought you were only connected to Telstra!).

BUT - you will find however that some sites either won't work or will complain about tracking / cookies etc. being blocked eg. this forum - one click will allow for the current site only (& be remembered).

Always remember - if something is free - then it is very likely us who are the real product! The Internet is NOT free!

Enough rambling

Not to my mind, they aren't. I NEVER want random sites (or any sites) to randomly send me notifications that they hope might interest me. I could end up spending all my time brushing them away (instead of spending too much of my time saying, "no, I don't want you to send me notifications").

Thanks for your explanations and suggestions. (If I sound growl-y, it's not directed at you.)

Yes, this is my position on it too - exactly. The language that comes forth from my mouth, when I have dismiss about a dozen of these at a time.....I just about take a hammer to the entire computer.

@ Frank N Furter - Thanks, I THINK this has fixed it. I have not seen any more of those bloody annoying ads all day yesterday since I went in there and turned off ALL notifications. I will let the thread know if they come back, but hopefully, you have pointed me to the correct place. Edited by Grogster 2019-07-08

Those annoyed enough with Windoze 10 and as we are talking about Linux, many years ago a message appeared in the Open Source Linux forums, which read:

Yes, and it IS happening....

Being a 99% Windoze and MicroSuck person, I often find things wanting with Windoze- with every new version requiring you buy more new hardware, and that Microsoft can crack down on YOU more and more in terms of how you relate to.....them.

I have looked at the Linux Kernel and some kind of GUI on top MORE AND MORE.

I have pretty much fallen in love with the PUPPY LINUX distro, as it is so sleek and functional, and it is dead easy to setup networking for things like SAMBA servers - I have a Puppy Linux box doing just that on my home network now.

ALL FREE, and it can talk to any kind of FTFP you can think of. So, setup a server that suits your purposes, and...done.

MS Server is a whole HEAP of issues. Not to speak ill of our lord and master. Hopefully, Gizmo won't zap this post cos of that last remark....

Puppy Linux: (any new version will have SAMBA SIMPLE SHARING pre-installed for you) Point to the volumes, share them, Windoze sees them....done.

MS Server: License, bollocks/bollocks/bollocks, can't do it cos of this, share what?, where was that to go again?, PAY ME!!!!, OK, shared. PAY ME!!!, Can't share this cos of....PAY ME!. OK, connection established. Can't share cos you have not PAID ME!.....

OK.....
I jest more then just a little, but still..............

Hi Grogs ... I can't really tell if you hate Microsoft more than you like Linux or the other way round. Just remember, AT&T's Bell Labs begat A which begat B which begat C which begat Unix which begat Linux. Grandma Bell was very fond and very efficient at extracting dineros from their customers pockets too.

Linus Torvalds, of course, did a magnificent job of re-engineering the Unix kernal into Linux, but he didn't make a lot of money doing it.

Doesn't that remind you of someone around here .... like Geoffg maybe?

My relationship with Windoze is a love/hate one. I love it when everything is working right, but I hate it when things like these pop-up ads won't go away. I guess even in Linux, that is bound to still be the case, so I am perhaps not ragging on Windoze so much as my own frustration with an OS that bugs me over a certain point.

Grogs - there's something wrong if you are getting as many popup ads as you seem to be. What browser are you using? (Opera?) I use Firefox with U-block Origin & I get NO ads by default unless I have "allowed" a site to do so.

Might be worth just trying Firefox & see if it makes a difference...
