Howdy.

I cannot make streaming audio work. In W10, it just works, so I think there is something missing in my Linux Mint install, but I don't know what. I have told the browser it is allowed to access website audio etc.

YouTube works fine. The audio is there for the videos.

But the streaming site - no.

The site I am trying to stream is:

THIS ONE

Can someone with Linux Mint test this link, and tell me if THEY can get any sound out of it? It might be that this radio station simply does not support anything other then Windoze, but I somehow doubt it, and a web-based streaming site should simply not care what system it is on, if everything is setup correctly....

Thanks for the reply.

Hmmmmm. Interesting....
I must be missing something in my Mint to make this work.
Is you Samsung tablet Linux-based?
I would be surprised if you said it was Microsoft-based.....

The html starts by checking the IE version number so it looks very much to be assuming only IE exists...

Might be able to fool it by getting your browser to claim it's IE.

It then goes off to assets.adobedtm.com so may be relying on Adobe (I guess flash).

G,

I'm running Mint 17.3 and the site initially comes up with a warning about an outdated Adobe Flash - I select ignore and after about 30 secs the audio starts.

I'm using Firefox as the browser.

As a result of your interest in LINUX I resisted for about 45 seconds and gave in.
Today my new "refurbished" $220 PC arrived. A couple of days ago I paid $60 for ZORIN ultimate or whatever it's called and this arvo I put it all together.
So I clicked on your site and immediately got some bloke called Nathan Muller.
Is that it?
I have worried about your taste in music for some time. You young blokes have no idea.
But this ZORIN thing seems to do the job as far as I'm concerned.

I put MINT on another PC and that is a bit primitive.

The Samsung is an Android device which I think has a Linux base somewhere. Definitely not MS.

BTW, I did sort of enjoy the music I heard. Bit of "Queen" I think he played. Funny accent on some of the commercials though.

G'Day Grogster et al

A long time ago PALCAL had all the trouble in the world trying to get MINT working. In the end he had to buy a genuine CD because LINUX can be a problem downloading without errors. I have had a similar problem so when I installed MINT recently I bought a USB stick for $20 and when I installed ZORIN I paid the $60 because "they" look after people like me.
Is it possible you have a corrupted installation?
As I said earlier, ZORIN does seem to be a good thing....for the simple things.
I have no idea if it has wine. I installed ARDUINO but could not see the USB ports and that is not altogether unusual.

WHY ME!

You can tell if a download worked or not by using the hash (md5sum).

(Can't say I've ever found one that didn't work but YMMV.)

Thanks for the replies.

Won't work in Opera browser for Linux. I went to a terminal, and sudo apt-get install opera flash-plugin I found on a website, and after entering my password, it downloaded and installed flash, but still no sound.

I then tried Firefox, and it works FINE in that browser.
The thing that is throwing me, is that I use Opera on W10 to stream that radio station, but Opera on Linux won't co-operate.

Oh well. I can just use Firefox for that. It is at least working in Firefox.

Yeah, I like "The Sound". No too much advertising, and they have some really good selections of songs as some of you have found out.

On Tuesday, they play two songs from a band back to back all day, and on Sunday they have 'The Side Show' from 7PM to Midnight, where the host chooses Vinyl records, and plays an entire side from an LP uninterrupted from start to end - not even any ads.

This weekend was a 'Triple Play Weekend' where they play THREE songs from a band back to back, but I don't think they run that EVERY weekend, just sometimes from what I remember.

Now it sounds like I am plugging the station, but not really, I just like this one.

G'Day John

The first time I installed MINT I went to the great trouble of checking the checksum. And it was good so the next time I figured "who needs it?" And the answer was "Me" It took a long time to never really understand what had gone wrong but now I think just pay the money and have one less headache. We old blokes need all the help we can get
YMMV ?

I liked Zorin, but Mint won at the end of the day, for ease of use - for me.
I might now reinstall Zorin on my test machine.

I have fully installed Mint 19 to a spare Intel NUC, and it is running very well indeed, and I have not really had any problems getting it all up and running except for the streaming audio, but I will just use Firefox for that, and Opera for everything else.

It took a bit of tracking down, but I think this is the link to the stream.

You can plonk it into VLC (my go-to player for Windows or Linux) or any other media player and listen without having to open a web browser.

I don't like having to use a browser. Much prefer to listen on my internet radio.

I have installed VLC for Linux in my Mint box, so I will try that and report back.

Streaming audio has been an annoyance for me for some time.

3 years ago I purchased an Opus One Internet radio which uses a Frontier Silicon chipset for the Internet streaming.
I blame Geoff for doing a review of the radio for Silicon Chip.

The idea is, you log into a website and setup your favorites from a list of 14000 or so Internet streams.
You could also add your own stream for any that weren't on the list.

The radio logs into the website when you turn it on and downloads your favorites ready for selection.

This worked well but I soon found many of my choices would disappear, either because they went off air or decided to change their streaming setup and I would spend a lot of time tracking down the new stream.

Many of the radio stations want you to use their app for your phone or log into their website so they can track you better. Google has taught them a lot.

To add insult to injury, in May, Frontier Silicon had an argument with the website they used for our database and we lost access to our favorites. The replacement website was very basic and while it did work, not as well as the original.

Yesterday when I was playing with Grogster's radio stream, I discovered that the Frontier Silicon website can now accept used provided streams and store favorites so I am happy again.

I will still have to regularly chase lost audio streams but I have somewhere to put them again.
