If you are ever wanting to test what ports are accessible from the internet, there is a handy side called "Shields Up" https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2 Its been around for decades! I use it to test open ports on web servers. Glenn The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago, the second best time is right now. JAQ |

If you get this happening it hasn't connected properly (and happens sometimes leaving the editor or otherwise times out) At the beginning you should get "Grogster COM1!! - ACTIVE - 170MM2 to be sure it has connected. Note, All the control codes are in the manual. |

AWESOME! Keep the posts coming, guys(and gals(if any)) - this is great. @ Gizmo - Did you try to connect? I will check out that link. @ akjw - Bloody Hell!!! I was not convinced that banner greeting would be working, but I must have set that up right too. Bearing in mind I am a Windoze user and Linux is ALMOST a mystery to me, I am please with progress thus far. ![]() EDIT: I will take the system OFFLINE soon, to clean-up the comments etc as suggested by Azure. If you can't connect........ Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops! |

That's still a good sign. ![]() The banner comes from the Linux ser2net utility, so you are at least getting as far as the Pi I have hanging off the router at the moment! ![]() Just going to take the thing offline now, to clean up the editor as suggested. I will also post results once I have done this. 170MM will be offline for a moment while I do this...... EDIT: OK, cleaned that and MM should be back online again. ![]() Smoke makes things work. I could not get putty to connect same problem as teraterm it just crashes. GfxTerm worked perfectly, could connect, edit properly and run commands, list, etc. Thanks Rob. I cleaned up the messy comments. |

hi, i get the "Port already in use" message when i try to connect (grogster.ddns.net:5000), but then the connection remains open (online) at this end for some reason. i have a feeling that after delivering the 'already in use' message your end should forcibly close the connection. addendum - finally managed to get in, using GFXterm everything works ok. editor and cursor keys (and mouse wheel) working correctly. disconnected at 11:18pm. cheers, rob :-) |

Just putting this "grogster.ddns.net" in the browser. ![]() I get "Grogster COM1!!! - ACTIVE - 170MM2" If I do "grogster.ddns.net:5000" the "Grogster COM1!!! - ACTIVE - 170MM2" flashes then clears. A few years ago had to setup Port forwarding for my granddaughter's three minecraft servers running under Ubuntu on an old HP laptop. She was having fun till the ISP said to stop or upgrade $$$$ervice. So she kept one running during the summer for just her friends. A browser based UI like ESPTerm webbased VT100 could be fun to play with. |

Got an initial connection with Putty @ 7:33am, but had the same issue with arrow keys & esc chars as mentioned above. Used the DNS name & worked very first time. Disconnected & tried again, & got a brief "Port In Use" message. Phil. Edit: Port still in use 10 minutes later. Might need some sort of inactivity timer. |

Connected OK at 0805 with Teraterm and MMEdit. MMEdit was able to use its file manager to copy the full program to it's edit window so it all seems to be working as it should. re the timeout. My 'mite has a 10 minute (600 seconds) inactivity timeout. If someone falls asleep at the keyboard, they get kicked off after 10 minutes. 3002:raw:600:/dev/ttyUSB0:38400 8DATABITS NONE 1STOPBIT banner1 AS it stands, it is a one-at-a-time system. This is all very good information. Thanks a TON to everyone who helped with this. I won't need multi-user connections, only one - me - to a remote system of mine. So, I will setup everything so that I am the only one who should ever be trying to connect, but with this public forum test, it is quite likely several people may read the thread and try a minute or two apart, if someone is already in, all others will be refused. So yeah, this is working a treat, and as it is only ever likely to be me in a single-user connection basis wanting to talk to the other end, I think this will work beautifully, and is a way to use one of my redundant Pi boards, and is cheaper then the Wiznet module, which was about US$50 from what I remember. Quirky Puppy Linux takes only 15 seconds from power-up to desktop on a Pi B+ board, so that is very quick which is what I wanted. I did not want to wait around for ages for the network sub-system to be ready. It looks the same as I left it, but I can't remember. This particular MM2 has been sitting on the shelf for quite a while.... The MM2, ddns host, and port-forwarding have all now been removed, so connections won't be possible from this post onwards. Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops! |

Not that much cheaper tho, I just checked and the new Pi b+ is $41 from my normal supplier I never did get in with terraterm, but I did get the banner- I suspect terraterm might be the issue rather than anything else Scary- that pi's specs are 200 mhz faster processor speed (1ghz/1.2ghz) and 4x the ram (256mb/1gb) of my first ever `new' computer, that cost me 1200 bucks back around Y2K, it ran xp happily- wonder if anyone has ever tried running xpsp1 on a pi??? jeez it had a 20gb hdd that cost me several hundred- I was given a 32gb credit card usb stick for free as a promotional giveaway the other day not to mention the size- a 500w psu, and a full sized case- versus something that you can easily lose if you put it down in the wrong place (like my workshop lol) how things have changed... |

I hear you. ![]() But it is a way for me to use up one of the FIVE Pi B+ boards I have lying around here doing nothing but gathering dust. If I actually had to buy the Pi to do this, that would probably make me look at other options. Re. TT - Yes, I have had lots of trouble getting TT to talk to Mites on the net. Most recently was Jim's(TassyJim) and Phil's(WhiteWizzard) tests. TT refused to talk to them, but GFXterm logged onto them right away. On the progress thing, I really hear that. My first USB flash drive was 256MB and cost about NZ$200 in those days. Would have only been USB1 speed too. It was in a beautiful brushed aluminium case though. Still..... My first hard-drive was a Seagate Series-5 20GB one, and that also cost NZ$250 or so back then. You could probably run XP in a VM on a Pi without too much trouble. Perhaps I will try that next while I am playing around with Pi's and Linux. ![]() My next test might be a Pi Zero as a network interface, as the Zero has a WiFi connection built-in, and is only US$5 last time I looked.(that might have changed) Smoke makes things work. The RPi is NOT Intel based so forget about running things like XP on it. There are a couple of emulators out there but not very successful. You can get "Windows 10 for RPi" but it is not what you think. It is a bloated command line system that needs a Windows 10 PC to create applications. Jim VK7JH MMedit |

Have you played with Windows 10 IoT on the Pi, Jim? I did look at that at one point, but as I was having reasonably good success with Linux, I just kept going down that path. Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops! |

If starting fresh (i.e. no RPi sitting idle) boards roughly like the RPi (LAN/WiFi/Linux/...) start at about $10 now. Still overkill but cheap and easy to use. (Things like the Orange Pi) John |

Boppa does make a valid point on the cost of the Pi for this approach. But as I have plenty of them doing nothing but gathering dust as mentioned..... The Pi Zero seems like a candidate with WiFi on-board. I have seen those Orange Pi and Bannana Pi clones, but I have also seen that they are temperamental, and often won't run the Pi software cos of changes in their hardware, but you get what you pay for I guess. I think the Orange or Bananna or both run rather hot too, which is never a good sign in my book. Heat is an electronic killer. ![]() Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops! |

I havent had much luck with the orange pi's, have 3 and all failed after several months of 24/7 operations |
