Here is a little video of it in action, complete with slo-mo.

Murdering flies.

Considering how ENRAGED I get with the fast little buggers being able to evade me with every swipe, I think I could have some fun here....

This is a MICROCONTROLLER forum !
I would suggest a MMite version of this:
Photonic Fence
Laser Zapper

You will get immediate feedback on SW quality
Just compare the number of burnholes on yourself and the room to the number of zapped flies

There was lots of hype around this some years back - but it never became a real product

Inside a room it may work safely as a horizontal curtain just below the ceiling
(you should not wave your arms to high...)

Re: MCU forum - yes, I know, but the original thread was posted there one year ago(please see page 1). I cannot change that now. I do post stuff like this in the OTHER TOPICS forum now, but that was then and this is now.

Thanks for the links, I will check them out.

Mosquito's are attracted by the UV light.
Flies are not.

The HV kills, but you need something that attracts them. Ranging from honey to dog sh*t.

i remember my dad's approach, 35 years ago....

vacuum cleaner - must be turned on first.

use the flexible hose plus extension pipe, but no accessory on the end. approach your quarry slowly. because they see the pipe mostly end-on it is not perceived as a threat until it is too late. when you've finished catching all the flies perform the following two steps:

1. turn off vacuum cleaner,

2. while the motor is still spinning down squirt a little fly spray into the end of the pipe. this will be sucked through and kill all the flies in the bag.

!!! WARNING!!!

do NOT reverse steps 1 and 2. if you do, the flies in the bag will still be killed, but the vacuum cleaner will be rendered single-use by the resulting explosion.

happy hunting,
rob :-)

Clever idea, Rob, I will try that and see if it works.

@ bigfix - This is an old thread, which is why the replies are still showing up in the MCU forum where the thread was originally posted. Any new humorous type threads I now post in the OTHER STUFF forum rather then here, so keep an eye on that forum if you like funny things from time to time.

rob, you are a very sick person.
I withdraw your sainthood.
But to be serious if we must, fly wire on all windows as noted by palcal?
My $50 Bunnings cat repeller would have only bothered a cat if the cat had tripped over it. But then I don't know if the ultrasonics don't bother cats or the thing just didn't detect the cats.

According to Dr. Google cats are "extremely annoyed" loud ultra sonic sounds - supposedly they have a wider hearing range than dogs. Check that your "repeller" is actually repelling

BrianP.

I had it on the back verandah for cats that visit at 3:00 am. The area is covered by CCTV and I have installed extra IR flood light so it might be that all that extra IR is too much. The problem is, is it not detecting them or are they deaf?
I had to cut it open to get to the gubbins and there is good signal on the transducer and it does make a clicking sound when I wave my hand past.
I will keep trying.
I have a couple of dog shutuperers that work well if you can get a clear shot.
But at the moment it is just repulsive

but i was being quite serious! we lived in blenheim, having moved up from dunedin. it would have been around 1978 or so. the house we had bought had very wide eves, and in the summer literally hundreds of flies would settle there in the late afternoon. while dunedin had a relatively cool climate, blenheim was very warm and dry.

so dad would go out with the vacuum cleaner, and pick them off one by one. it was funny to watch, but highly effective, and after a while dad and i would take turns at the job.

the fly spray warning, which dad was adamant about, was because - at least back then - fly spray used hydrocarbons as a propellant. highly flammable stuff. if it went through the vacuum cleaner while power was applied, sparks from the motor brushes could ignite the propellant, resulting in...

cheers,
rob :-)

I realized that you were fair dinkum but it does seem a bit dangerous. I even started to imagine if it would be possible to produce a spark from a vacuum cleaner when turned off. You have copper wires rotating in a residual magnetic flux and the commutator being momentarily shorted. Just thinking.
On the subject of flies. I have had the hood lining of my car covered in flies all dead.
It was in the country and I don't remember the weather conditions but I needed a vacuum cleaner to clean them up.
Oh, alright, you can have your sainthood back.

That had to be one of the best musical-comedy movies EVER made. I still love that movie even now.

This short scene I thought was so funny at the time, and I still think is. Car people always appreciate this one!

Haven't laughed so much when reading this forum.
Some of the comments had me in stitches.
Are you sure you're not comedians rather than micro's geeks.

Grogster, when I bought one of these bug zappers to put into my greenhouse all it did was attract more.
So good luck

Chris
