@ Pluto: Possibly, but the concept has changed since I posed the example schematic above. I am no longer using the 595 chips, and driving all the segments via the 62783's directly from a 44-pin MM2.  @ Quazee137: You're on to it. @ Vegipete: Sorry about that.
