Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Don't they run off 20kHz or so?

My cat seems to be in an almost perpetual sleep mode - lucky sod.

Best wishes,

Tom

i was actually somewhat serious - referring to the RFID chips fitted inside most models of cat (and dog) manufactured here in the last 10 years or so. i'd like to be able to make an automatic cat door that only lets in authorized felines, but have never managed to find out details of the RFID chips used in NZ.

cheers,
rob   :-)

Wouldn't +that+ confuse the unauthorized ones. Gotta be careful when you start messing with the minds of cats.

You know you can just buy these things, Petporte is one such vendor. Or can you not get ones compatible with those wiley NZ cats.

Best wishes,

Tom

The NZ cats go in and out upside down, Tom. It confuses the RFID system because the magnetic waves fall to the bottom.

My RFID-RC522 module ...

does this help? (arduino instruction but has a good pinout diag)

RC522 kit.zip

Still looks like a lot of faff compared to Grogs' recommendation. Also the tags are different - the predominant flavour seems to be 125KHz where as this reader uses 13.56MHz tags - beware when buying extra cards/tags

Rob, I did this with a MiniMicromite and different RFID reader module back in 2012. Search with RFID and 'paceman' and you'll find some posts.
The frequency used is either 125 or 134 KHz but the reader coil you use needs to be closer than about 25mm. There are several protocols used with the implants, here in Oz it's typically RDX-B but also HDX - different countries can have different protocols. Your vet can show you a new implant in it's package and that'll have the protocol stamped on it. They can also scan your cat to get it's implant number, then you can check if your module's reading right.

It was a fun project but I gave up on it after a few months because of several 'cat' issues. First, friendly cats followed by un-friendly cats are often moving rather quickly resulting in 'congestion' at the door, thus no reading happens. Secondly the range of the reader coil is less than 25mm so you need something to 'line-up' the cat. I used a short length of perspex tube. Thirdly, cats find curfews insulting so if you get the door to stay closed preventing the cat exiting after hours, they'll probably chew the servo mechanism for the door cam to bits - as ours did!

My veterinarian daughter thought I'd done well persevering for the few months it was semi-operational but I then gave up. The cat went back to her normal ways and lived to a ripe old 17 years.

Gizmo, I just had a quick read of the Captain's link re your RC522 module. Looks like they're using NFC communication at 13.56 MHz. That might be a new 'standard' but I guess it'll depend how old your pets (or vets) are. I remember when I was playing with it the vet's reader wands came from various suppliers and different models could read different protocols. Maybe they've added an NFC coil to the readers these days as well.

The issues of short range and multitude of implant standards might be avoided (depending on the temperament of the cat) with a collar and key-fob for a standard door RFID reader.
