Check the output voltage on the data pins while disconnected. Some of these things always use pullups to 5V even if a link has changed VCC to 3.3V. Otherwise, yes, that's the sort of creature.

I tend to use bare board/el cheapo ones too. Also a fan of the CH340. :)

That module should be fine. If you do look to supplement your supply, I probably have 2 dozen of these, and find them altogether suitable: CH340G
PicoMite, Armmite F4, SensorKits, MMBasic Hardware, Games, etc. on fruitoftheshed
