YES, it worked fine, and I have the machine fully built up and working.
Should have posted an update - sorry.  
Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops!

Thanks Grogs, all these tales are good !
A while ago for some fun I also built a PC from bits, a slightly different Gigabyte motherboard. It too initially had a different no-boot issue but reported a cpu error, fixed by stuffing about with display connectors. I lashed out on a liquid cooler as we have had hot summers - only to have had the annual rainfall in three months. Oh well.
The supply shortage is getting to be a pain.
