Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

One of the very few things I can remember from my maths at school is the formula for solving simultaneous equations. :)

X = (-B + SQRT(B^2 -(4*A*C)))/2A
X = (-B - SQRT(B^2 -(4*A*C)))/2A

Whether I've converted the formula into BASIC correctly is something else... :)

Oh, I often forget stuff and do stupid things. It's one of the more endearing parts of age - people just let you get on with it. :)

Something I really appreciate about the 'shed here is the range of friendly knowledgeable people that are willing to share and help. Plus great stories of past exploits.

Not to be picky, but
  Mixtel90 said  X = (-B + SQRT(B^2 -(4*A*C)))/2A
X = (-B - SQRT(B^2 -(4*A*C)))/2A
is the solution to the general quadratic equation:
  Quote  AX^2 + BX + C = 0

Well - I did say I forgot things... :)
I've not used that (or even written it down) at any time in over 50 years. It could be something I could get made up at the chemist for all I know...

Thanks Pete :)

What's really frustrating for me, is I actually used to know all this before my brain injury,

Don't be too hard on yourself Lew, and don't worry if we sometimes seem impatient with you.
My latest hobby is collecting medical information packs.
The sort that the doctors give you when you are diagnosed with something nasty.
The pack I was given last year included the contact details for the local 'acquired brain injury' support group.
I didn't need it because one of my other support groups already covered that.

This years information pack is more important. My neurologist has put any further 'brain fiddling' on hold until the latest issue is resolved.

My advice - do what you can when you can and take it easy between times of productivity.

Jim Lew etc

Just when I start feeling sorry for myself you blokes turn up and make me feel lucky.

Mick Pete.

Can you remember the S&T formulae?
I can't

S&T? Sine, cosine and tangent? I use them fairly regularly. Mind you, I never really memorized the various identities.

Pete.

sin S + sin I = 2 sin((S+T)/2)cos((S-T)/2)
etc.

It's the sort of thing that we were expected to remember at uni. and for some reason "S&T formulae" has stayed with me.
I had to look it up

I do remember 1955 and trying to remember OHMs LAW.

It is a bit sad that all that maths has gone because I never used it other than to pass exams.

But I wouldn't have missed it for quids.

I was useless at the trig stuff. I still am, for that matter! I've not the slightest idea how to use it and, should I need to (If I can even recognise that the situation needs it), I have to go on a search. I know it involves Sin, Cos & Tan but beyond that - nope.  :)  It's true that, unless you keep using information, it gets pushed out of the way to make room for other stuff. In my case, like you Peter, I've simply not used trig to any extent since I left school. Most of it has simply disappeared as it's fallen into disuse.

I no longer think of Ohm's Law, other than using the V/I*R and W/V*I triangles to work things out. Do you think Mr Ohm will forgive me?

G’day Lads,

You blokes make me feel feeble brained, I left tech school in 1975 and at one stage I wanted to be a mathematics teacher.

I eventually went and did a fitter and turner apprenticeship. The maths there was pretty lame compared to quadratic equations and calculus etc.

I hardly remember any of that stuff these days, to see you all chatting nonchalantly about it really makes me realise how much has fallen out of my brain. Maybe I have had too much scotch. (OK Jim, I know there is no such thing as too much Scotch).

Anyway, glad all that knowledge is not lost in history.

Regards,

Mick
