External protection is only needed for cells that don't have their own.
Having both will probably work. If not remove one.

Well it's been charging on my desk for 30 mins and (despite my hack job recovering the charging units from Lewis' PCBs) it hasn't burst into flames or even become warm yet ... and ~2 hrs later it is charged.
