Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Hi Lads,

I use chemtools flux remover spray can Link

Which works well with an old tooth brush.  The result can be tacky but this dries away after an hour or so, but IPA will remove the tackiness if you need it cleaned quicker.

Regards,

Mick

Creative product name.

We have local a product similar to "Aerostart" called "Start Ya Bastard". The lawn mower gets to hear that a lot on cold mornings!

  thwill said  Hi folks,

What should I be using as a flux remover?

Any suggestions ?

Best wishes,

Tom

Are you ready for a good laugh?

Tektronic used to clean oscilloscopes in a bath tub!

Google "tektronix oscilloscope cleaning". You tube videos are available!

At Pan Am we found that a good soak for a few hours in reverse osmosis filtered water and a dish washing detergent followed by a thorough rinse and a few hours in an oven at 125° F is an excellent solvent for most flux deposits. Water dissolves the flux but not the board and component coatings.

Sometimes the simplest approach is the best.

I knew about Tektronic. Bathtubs aren't a bad idea even now, but you do need very good drying. Great for cleaning keyboards! I've done it myself, and it's kinder than a dishwasher. I've still to experiment with taking a couple into the shower...

Ah... those were the days...
When a single bit of water seeping into a so-called "sealed" pot didn't short it out. :)

Approx 20 years ago, in a different place, I experimented with using hot solvent to melt the solder and de-flux PCB's at the same time.

There was a commercial fluorinated fluid used for the purpose, but very expensive.

Neat Glycol (pure  antifreeze) will clean the board well but also swells/dissolves epoxy (aka PCB material) to some extent. Also toxic and passes through skin easily - not good, don't try it.

Glycerol (glycerine) worked well, melted the solder and also cleaned the board, at least prior to having to clean the glycerol off of it. Boiling glycerol starts to decompose to noxious products so I would not use it further.

Sadly hot glycerol is used in "fog juice". My trial formed a misty fog which widely dispersed through the flat making many surfaces sticky until cleaned up !!

So I stopped at that point   .

The rosin/flux sounds like it will dissolve in alcohols and water, I think people originally used methylated spirits (?) Maybe carefully try a metho/glycol mix.
