The sign of a good language is its longevity. The "BASIC is only for beginners and not a real language" argument has been going on for decades. But BASIC is as popular as ever, and is used for hard core applications as well as teaching and hobbies. I've seen BASIC used as the primary language in some pretty expensive manufacturing equipment, talking several hundred thousand dollars here, and its the language of choice for quick development by many developers. You can still find systems using early versions of GWBasic, many office/manufacturing software apps are written in Visual Basic and VB.net. On the internet Classic ASP, which is just VB script, is still in use on more sites than its newer sibling, VB.net, even though Microsoft stopped development of Classic Asp over 15 years ago. So as far as I'm concerned, BASIC is going strong where many other languages have disappeared, making it a GREAT language! Re EEV Blog, I would still be cautious about sending a Micromite to Dave. But maybe its worth a try, he may see the point of it and really like it. But even if he hates it, whats the worse that can happen? I wont have any affect on those that already use and love it. I don't think there is much to be gained (at this time) of pushing uMite at Dave. Let's let uMite MKII mature, gain further user base, gain more code, gain more PCBs (especially an Arduino compatible module), then perhaps. Peter The only Konstant is Change |

There can never be an Arduino compatible module based on MMBasic. Arduino sketches will never be able to run. Having a connector with pins in the same configuration does not make it compatible at all. Not one source code available in the Arduino community will run. Not one shield in the market will work with supplied example code. So what is the use? Microblocks. Build with logic. |

Well, I did post this about the Mick's Nanomite on the EEVBlog forum, but it didn't seem to generate much interest amongst the posters there. Yes, Dave is very generalist and unless it grabs his imagination, well, it won't get far. He will have lots to say if something is not quite right - in his humble opinion. For crying out loud, all I wanted to do was flash this blasted LED. |

Just like Maximite, having connector pins in the same configuration does enable a user to plug in Arduino shields so that would offer some kind of hardware compatibility. This can be handy for quick development. So I can see that as useful. There are a lot of great hardware shields for low prices on eBay. A library of MMBASIC code for various shields would be awesome. Might increase the user base like it did for Arduino. Then again, I just use my Maximite shown earlier in this thread. www.elproducts.com |

Yes I know I'm behind on releasing the arduino-ish board. There were setbacks, interruptions, and my father's death/estate to consume my time. I will be breathing life back into it. Stay tuned. Micromites and Maximites! - Beginning Maximite |

Didn't know/Didn't remember (old age) you were were working on one. Sorry to hear about your loss. Only time can heal. Look forward to what you create. www.elproducts.com |

Lots of cheap hardware, ie the shields, lots of source code from which to start. As MatherP has shown to great effect, MMBasic4.6+CFunctions makes porting Arduino code much easier/quicker. Just seems to me that for the uMite to be able to leverage the commodity low cost Arduino hardware is a great advantage - I can't see what the downside(s) is(are) - so why not ?
