As far as I have found, you can only control updates over WIFI connections. If you use Ethernet, you don't have the option. A lot of the hints and reviews doing the rounds are based on Pro versions and experience gained during the beta phase. It will take a while for the real life experiences to become more prevalent. Here is one review about WX that doesn't pull any punches on the negative side of things: ========================================== Windows 10 Starts Charging For Missing Features Windows 10 splits opinions and it has split mine. I think Microsoft nailed the core OS, but the policies around it are controlling and overly invasive. In short: great software, shame about the rules. And here’s another perfect example… Now Windows 10 has launched, Microsoft is starting to fill in the blanks regarding features removed from Windows 7 and Windows 8 and it doesn’t make for pleasant reading. Why? Because behind this free upgrade are the first signs of where Microsoft will start charging users in future and it begins at the very bottom: 1. Solitaire Yes, surprising as it might seem, Microsoft has announced it will actually charge users a monthly subscription to play Solitaire – a free staple of Windows releases since Windows 3.0 in 1990. It continues: http://www.forbes.com/sites/gordonkelly/2015/08/05/windows-10-charging/ ========================= Cheers Don... https://www.dontronics.com |

Privacy is one huge concern with Win 10. After installation it may be worth going through the Settings and making adjustments to suit your own level of comfort about privacy. There is no doubt that Microsoft has become very nosy about collecting your information. However it is probably no worse than Apple and Google and a few others. |

So finally the secretary has to use her computer for work. In my old job solitaire was what was on the screens all the time and people got angry when you actually asked them to do work and get them off their game. Microsoft always has been a company that allowed and encouraged programmers to develop for their OS. Surely there are enough solitaire versions out there that are for free or for a small price. It allows for more competition. MS also has to walk the fine line of not including to much extras to prevent being sued. It is just how things are evolving, not always what we want. About privacy, i feel more comfortable with Microsoft then with google or apple. At least i can switch things off. If i was a US citizen i would complain more about patriot acts and other laws that invade privacy. Microblocks. Build with logic. |

G'day Guy's, I just did a reinstall of win 7 on my laptop as when my daughters used it they must of downloaded every ad and spyware they came across. Every time I used explorer or firefox a new page would springup and hang the browser, I went thru and uninstalled everything I saw as (spyware, games etc) but it still was buggy as hell. With this new win7 install been doing updates left right and centre and still haven't got a win10 prompt. So that could be a blessing as from what I've read so far microsucks can go jump as win7 will keep me going for a few years yet. Cheers Bryan |

Microsoft want to follow Apple and Google into the App store Business with the added twist of Software Subscriptions. I don't use apple because you can only install Apple approved Apps and Microsoft will do the same thing in the future. If I buy the Hardware I want to do what I want with it, not give it to Microsoft and then let them control it. Especially not if they start limiting what I can install and charging monthly for what I do install. They claim it is to protect the user but to the best of my experience, "if you make something Idiot Proof, only an Idiot will want to use it." If WIN7 Pro dies then its LINUX time. I not make any conclusions yet. Until now windows has been pretty open to 3rd party software and i think that is not going to be a door that they are closing. I understand the steps they make for the Home editions. The 99.9% that has no clue needs to be protected against their own ignorance. For the 0.1%, use the pro version or even enterprise edition and all is well. Microsoft already has the business market, and now they really want a big part of the consumer market. Those needs are different and i think windows is adapting just fine. Still have the choice which version i am going to use. As for advertisements. I have another strategy and that is when i have some idle time i click on all of them. If a million or so more people did that then advertisements in youtube, gmail, etc will stop because it will cost too much money without any return. Microblocks. Build with logic. |

Hi All, Another thing to consider... Windows is using your internet bandwidth to distribute the 3.7GB install files to other people because their own servers cannot handle the massive bandwidth.. See Windows Peer-Peer Whilst I can understand the problem and I think its a good idea I don't think it should be enabled by default. Information on how to stop it is in the above link. And If you have a metered connection, as in paying for how much bandwidth you use, or you have a monthly cap this theft by Microsoft could cost you dear. $50SAT is Silent but probably still working. For information on LoRa visit http://www.loratracker.uk/ |

One thing about Win 10 is that the cost of making it free to upgrade is that Microsoft has become very nosy. They have given themselves the right through their Ts & Cs, to check on you. I turned off all of the settings, I could find, manually to stop MS but it takes a bit of effort. I found a German company, O&O Software GmbH of Berlin, who make a small program called O&O ShutUp 10 to help you adjust the privacy settings. I haven't tried it yet. Do any of our German contributors know if this company is OK? |

There is a lot of info on the net and videos all over YouTube about W10's snoopy policy, and I don't mean the cute beagle. ![]() Basically, from the bit that most videos and sites are quoting from the W10 EULA, MS have the right to scan anything and everything on your machine, including email content, documents - even ones in private folders - any have a look around for any hacked or otherwise unautorised software.(cracks and illegal/pirated softwares). I am still running 8.1, thanks to RobB's tip on disabling the automatic download of W10 for now, and I am VERY grateful for that info, and glad I did that now. It is probably true that some of the videos and sites on this privacy thing, are blown out of proportion to some extent, but by the same token, I imagine that most of what they talk about is actually also true to some extent. ![]() As for the charging for things like Solitaire and a DVD player - that does seem to me, to be a bit of a case of idiocy on MS's part, what with so many other 3rd party FREE players and games etc available, as another member here pointed out.(not to paraphrase that member) I am guessing that MS are hoping that most people won't even notice the new conditions, and will be sucked into the W10 vortex, and once in, it is then very difficult to get back out - without opening your wallet, that is. Linux Mint deserves a closer look these days. That or Zorin OS. The only thing tethering me to Windows at the moment, is really the technical programs I use for PCB and schematic use, and they MIGHT run under WINE - I should check.... Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops! |

Grogs If you want the old Win 7 games back on Win 8, 8.1, & 10 there is a way. I'll look it up and get back. I have Win 7 Solitaire and all of the games working on Win 10. However, it's not a patch on Solitaire (free) on the iPad. Yeah, I went over to the dark side earlier in the year. It's an odd place. Bob See the attachment for how to do Win 7 games on win 10. 2015-08-20_024004_Get_Windows_7_games_for_Windows_10.pdf |
