Initially I thought it was the driver. Then I thought it was the sparkfun chip. Then I thought it was my old laptop. Then I tried a newer machine and was weary of windows 10 so eventually I started to believe it was something else. Days later and in the end it was user fault. Not sure who maintains the micromite documentation, but maybe they could emphasise that Ctrl C should be used if autorun is on and you want to escape back to the basic command prompt.

You guys have been excellent help. I feel like simple mistakes taking up 90% of my time are the story of my life. Haha...
