a bit of an oxymoron. consider for example: "access to sky TV satellite services are available FREE to anyone who is already paying for the service". if you are already paying for something, then it is not free - you have paid for it! if it were free, then anyone (subscriber or not) would have access. the SC statement also implies that the printed copy of the magazine that 'joe bloggs' buys at the local newsagent does NOT contain sufficient information to build the projects contained therein. therefore, by definition, the plans in the magazine are incomplete, something that i'd imagine that to most readers would be unacceptable, as well as being legally dubious (the printed magazine is 'incomplete', not fully functional, perhaps even misleading in the marketing to the casual purchaser). the obvious way around these problems would be for every copy of the magazine (and every kitset) to contain an ID number that can be used to access the firmware on the SC website. it is not like the firmware contains 'trade secrets' or anything, on the whole the code behind such projects should be relatively simple. such an approach would gain SC goodwill, and have zero net impact on profits. of course, our favourite SC authors make their software available for no charge via other channels. those authors are to be commended ![]() cheers, rob :-) ps: i agree with gizmo, this particular project should have been designed with a couple of 555 timers! |

Well Update.... It works now. Flashed the chip earlier tonight & away it went. Funny thing is the dogs are quiet tonight, so it hasn't had a real test. Maybe their owners TV is out; or Broadband down; devices all flat maybe. I did actually ring SC this morning to find only reception present, after a brief conversation regarding who does what & has which authority, the lady I spoke to decided to make an executive decision & just send me what I needed. Received it later in the day. Very refreshing to find someone with basic common sense, & the initiative to take it on themselves to solve a simple problem with a simple solution. The supplier did eventually get back to me and after double checking that the chip was actually blank AND had the trademark white paint spot on it, decided to post me out another one. Now just need to add a remote... Cheers Phil. |

On completion I can see some merit in what the PIC achieves, few flashing LED test modes, and an Audible test mode so you can hear that the output is working. [Quote] I built an Oatley kit once. Can't say it really worked, as the dogs kept barking. (I checked that it worked) Lol, might have been deaf dogs. These ones respond to the little hand held ones, you gotta walk to the fence though. Cheers. |

Four little Maltese and an owner that is never there, except when he lets them out for toilet at night... on our front lawn. He uses them like guard dogs, so the absolutely go off when someone walks past the front of his house. Unfortunately you sort of need to educate them otherwise they just get used to the sound of the ultrasonic noise and just ignore it. |

I used a 'Super Soaker' (one of those really big water pistols) full of turps one day. Hit them right in the date with it and you won't see them for dust. Doesn't matter if they are deaf either. No lasting damage but they will remember you, and your front yard, and won't come back. Nothing electronic about it......and you don't have to worry about flat batteries. There are 10 kinds of people in the world. Those that understand binary and those that don't. |

Update:- Tweeter array is not properly positioned yet, but I bounce it off the shed. 3 culprits; 2 Terriers, 1 half bred pig dog. Terrier 1 - Hoarse pointless bark - Shuts up rather briefly. Terrier 2 - Obnoxious yappy bark - Half deaf to a hand held "Bopper" & just plain stupid. Pig Dog - Like to just wander & hear the sound of his Yap - High tails it to his kennel. Maybe I need to draw on some alternate brilliant ideas that also find their origins in Perth. For those who haven't seen this invention it's definitely worth a look. I think it could be expanded on & would certainly benefit from having a micro in control. Cheers Phil. |
