Fascinating discussion guys - all opinions / suggestions are relevant within their application scopes.

Very early in the thread my mind was turning to a FET possible solution. Resistance / auto transformer solutions have a cost rr torque disadvantage, TRIAC methods have their own lack of flexibility problems.

Using FETs & perhaps PWM we have the option of sensing the starting current & keeping it within the maximum allowable amount. No peak cycle surge current problems & once you set the max current under the generator limit there should be no problem.
