  Lodovik said  Just to say that I'm in for the 2022 challenge. I'm eager to participate.

Thanks.

Currently there are 5 people who have indicated they would enter:

   @jirsoft
   @Ludovik
   @oldhandmixer
   @TimD
   @Volhout

I'd also be prepared to bet on @vegipete writing something even though he hasn't explicitly said so; though if he's anything like last year I'll have to drag an official submission out of him kicking and screaming.

If we get 4 more people who say they would enter then I'm prepared to pull the trigger on this, otherwise I'm going to say I've dodged the bullet and get back to my own projects.

Of course I have no monopoly on this and if somebody else is prepared to organise the challenge with fewer competitors or different rules/restrictions then they should go ahead. I'm still prepared to stump up a share of the prize fund, I just won't feel obliged to produce a results video.

Best wishes,

Tom

Tom, If I am correct, there were only eight in the first challenge. Those missing are:

- @lizby
- @vegipete
- @MauroXavier
- @realbobele
- @Mixtel90
And potentially William Leue

They don't need to be games as shown by Mixtel90. Programs that aid in electronic design would help those not into the hardware side of things.

I'm thinking about it, but sadly lacking in programming inspiration at the moment.  :(

I have 2 "sort of" projects that I've been playing with, neither of which would be suitable and both of which are likely to be left for some time due to "programming block".

Does anyone who's indicated an interest (or even anyone who hasn't indicated an interest; they can speak out without having any skin in the game) think that having a financial prize is actually important or should it just be bragging rights ?

There's no problem pulling together a little bit of money like last time, but even first prize would probably account for < 5 GBP (possibly considerably less) per hour of work.

Should there instead be a plaque ? ... and yes, I am thinking a screen printed rectangle of best-quality Chinese PCB ;-)

Best wishes,

Tom

My participation last year was purely for the enjoyment and challenge of it, so I'm not worried about prizes as such - although it was very kind and generous of Mick Gulovsen to provide them.

Kind regards,
Tim.

GDay Leo, All,

  LeoNicolas said  I'm participating for fun. No prizes are necessary for me.

Honestly, the money is not an issue, in my case it is a small way of paying back the community for the help I have received over the years. This year 2 others (I wont name unless they wish to be acknowledged) are going 3 ways on the split with me.

I understand that the prizes are paltry compared to a real competition and that entries will be placed for the fun of it but why not have a few beers/cokes in the process. I am open to a PCB or certificate award as well, lets see where that one runs.

@TimD,

Thank you for your kind words, as I iterated earlier it is my way of paying back the community in some small part for what I have gained from it (both financially and with support and ideas)

Regards,

Mick

I'm participating for the fun of programming and the challenge, not for the prize. I will enter even if there's no prize. I don't even think I could win but I'm eager to do my best and see where it goes.

I like the competition for the competition, not for the prices (and the probability I win is small anyway  ). I'm on the other side ready to donor some small money for prices when needed...

Thanks everyone. I wasn't asking for donations to the prize-pot, I was just sounding out for opinions.

The challenge will be going ahead this year! We're just ironing out some of the logistics, expect an announcement and the rules by the end of the week.

Best wishes,

Tom

Hi Tom,

Maybe, in the challenge rules, you can include some suggestions or directions on the hardware to be used with this challenge.
The previous challenge was on CMM2, and CMM2 was (at that time) only existing as a basic CMM2 rev 1. The expansions (mouse, WIFI, 32MB RAM, 3 nunchuck ports, etc..) where not generally available at that time.
This accounts even more for the picoMite. The basic RP module has virtually no peripheral HW. The VGA version has a variety of platforms with more or less independently developed peripherals, only commonality is the VGA connector and the PS2 connector.

As a HW guy, I am most intrigued by connecting something to the platform, and most of my "projects" do. For the challenge... what HW can be added (judges must be supplied with HW to check each contribution).

- just complicating matters -

Volhout

Maybe a "completely wild suggestion". If we standardize on Mick's VGA board (as an example, it supports multiple game interfaces) I am willing to sponsor (co-sponsor) the hardware for the competitors (order boards, and the minimal set of components) so each contestant can build his own platform, must only supply the pico board, and we have an even playfield. This would also standardize the VGA pico plaform, of which (in the end) all would benefit.

I think, at the end of the day, it's a MMBasic *programming* competition. You could program on anything that runs MMBasic. It's the quality of the programming that matters. I can very easily write truly horrible programs on all platforms so it doesn't matter what I use - that only changes the available IO :) .

(I'm flattered that you should consider my little PicoGAME. Perhaps I should build one and test it. ;) )

It's a nice idea Volhout but we've only got 6-7 competitors as it is so I prefer to keep the obstacles to entry as low as possible especially since the expense in shipping even a PCB and bag of components back and forward for the US or Oz is not inconsequential.

The platforms for the 2022 challenge are 99% finalised and will be:

* CMM1 or CMM2 - keyboard and VGA monitor (no mouse)
* PicoMite - SD card, keyboard and VGA monitor or 320x240 ILI9341
* MMBasic for Windows - keyboard, mouse and monitor
* In the event that one of the judge’s cannot find/muster this hardware a submitted program may have to be judged based on a “ported” version, or even a recording made by another judge.

Best wishes,

Tom

I have just entered the world of the Maximite having received my first computer last Friday

I would love to enter a competition.  Wouldn't care about what the prize, but giving away a Colour Maximite 2 Gen 2 Delux would help bring people to the party

Welcome onboard, what did you get ?

I'm sure it would, but those are (a) not cheap, and (b) under the current silicon shortage about as rare as hen's teeth.

Perhaps if @Mixtel90's PicoMite VGA GAME board works out we might be able to slip an unpopulated PCB to the top 3 entrants.
