Interestingly, telstras coverage map shows far more coverage, yet I was there only two months ago, and according to that map i had perfect 4g coverage.... Yet I distinctly remember climbing up and standing on the doorstep of my car, holding both my 3g phone (sony) and 4g telstra dongle up as high as I could and there was no signal... In fact I didnt get signal back until I drove past the oval in town.... yet it is on telstras map (10km north/east of the town marker marked Here- full green coverage)- must have imagined it I spose...
And its all green to the north up the the next town, I suppose I MUST of had coverage driving up there too, yet I distinctly remember no signal for near on an hours drive...
Must have been imagining that too I spose....
(the ONLY part of that map that has ACTUAL coverage is the tight little circle around the marker... the rest is from personal experience- pure BS!!!)

A note!!!!
I went from dialup YES 56K, direct to satellite about 15 years ago. I had almost no phone be it 23 Karat 2G or half a roll of toilet paper. I watched the guys "fixing" my phone about 25 years ago. AFTER at least 20 complaints, BUT they had to come from Brisbane, a mere 1850 kliks by the shortest route. Lead covered, paper insulated, probably 50 pair cable. !!!
ADSL, WTF is that ???
I have paid thousands in satellite fees, sometimes I can manage to upload a few photos.
I didnt mention in my previous post that I get 40/60 download limits. That 40 gig TOTAL, up and down between the hours of 06:00, and I think 00:00. I get 60 gig more UP and DOWN, between 00:00 and 06:00. I am heading for 66 years, I sleep between obout 20:00 and 05:30. Go figure
and have gone back to free to air tv and renting dvd (well I discovered they are usb sticks these days- and you have to bring your own!)
Owwwwwww! This was something I always predicted they would do. Can you give me any more details on that? Still rent physical DVD or BluRay here at the moment.
Soo!!! Weekend is over. How did the Mint install go Grogster?
Yes, I DID get mint installed. I at first tried to install to an 8GB USB3 flash-drive, but Mint moaned that it needed about 12GB or so, so I had to install on an old-fashioned spinning HDD(shock!, horror!), as I did not have any SSD's lying around.
Despite the HDD install, it runs OK. I was quite impressed with how easy it is to navigate, and it certainly is SOMEWHAT similar to Windoze. However, I hate the GUI on Windows 10 was such a vengeance, that pretty much any other GUI makes me happy these days.
I am trying to get hold of an SSD to install to, as I am sure that would probably help the performance of Mint. I used a spare 2TB WD Green drive - seemed appropriate - green...mint.... Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops!

Our 'dvd/video' shop isnt even there anymore, its become a bakers! What they do have out the front of woolies is two 'atm' style machines (like the freestanding ones you often see in similar locations, these actually stand in a bank of them (redicard, commonwealth and anz if I remember correctly) and some people often mistake them for atms lol bring your cashcard and your usb stick, go browsing for your movie (type, name, etc etc) stick usb in, stick card in, money gone, movie on usb stick I havent looked real hard at the way they encrypt it, but its only good for 24hr/3 days after that it doesnt play any more (it uses its own player on the usb stick, not vlc/media player etc) and I suspect that the actual data on the usb is encrypted so you couldnt just copy it to your hdd
re mint 12gb???
jeez I got ubuntu on a 4gb (16.0.4 lts) and linux cnc would fit on a 2gb one (altho mines on a 4gb- its only 1.2gb)
thats the laser engravers work btw
(and jeez that keyboard needs a dedusting, it doesnt look that bad IRL

I still spin wheels on all my machines !! BUT, running Linux they mostly dont spin at all unless I need some new .lib file. Unlike windowz which loads everything even if you dont need it, and then preceeds to run them in the background " just in case you need it". Most of my hard drives are more than 10 years old, and STILL dont have a single error.
Linux CNC is running quite an old but very stable kernal ( wheezy if I remember correctly) and it performs superbly. What we need now is a built in Gcode generator!!.
To Grogster, Good on ya bloke !!! Now play with it ( Mint I mean ) see what you can do. Check the software repository ( suppository if you are a liberal) see what programs you can find.
Im going to Cooktown for a few days, I want good reports when I get back.
p.s. just watched 4corners!!! If I want good internet I will move to Dunedin on the south island, er except for the cold er and the earth quakes
be at peace all.

Linux can fit in a few MB (maybe less, in the minimum) but Mint includes GUI (well, several GUIs as you can choose what you like) and many many apps. Trying to appeal to those used to Windows, I suppose.
That's true of many Linux distros (distributions) aimed at the typical PC (which has GB of RAM and GB or maybe TB of hdd).
I like Mageia but Mint suits many as does Ubuntu.

Linux Mint is not my first Linux. I have been playing with Linux installs for years, but never REALLY got into it in a big way, as Windows was always my fallback. Now with Windows 10 giving me so many problems, I look at Linux more and more these days.
I've played with Lindows, Ubuntu, Puppy, Tiny Linux, Red Hat, Fedora, Mint and various server Linux's such as OpenFiler and FreeNAS. Learning a little more about Linux and the command-line with each distro I play with. I used to use NASlite on my main NAS, but support for that seems to have vanished, and until recently they still used ext2 and no passwords at all.(if you can find it, you can access it) Ultimately, I settled on Puppy Linux with SAMBA, as it is so easy to get going in the latest Puppy, as SAMBA comes pre-installed with a little GUI to setup the shares. I could setup ext4 and a basic password. Puppy with SAMBA is also free, NASlite was not. Not a complaint - NASlite was very cheap. The full-blown NAS Linux's were overkill for me, and to complicated to setup with users and passwords and permissions for everything, RAID and ZFS etc, etc, etc.
The W10 thing that irritates me is the UPDATES. The core W10 OS itself seems to run OK when doing things, but the forced updates that take forever and seem to be bigger then the OS itself, along with the fact that installing the updates seems to cause a whole plethora of other issues - THAT is my main problem with W10. The OS itself, by itself, seems OK. But I also hate the 2D GUI on W10. Sure, you can change that easy enough I guess. Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops!

LMAO ATM,
All morning I've been getting these "Cool Talk" messages about an update. Apparently I clicked wrong around 7:00 & ended up scheduling it for 7:22am.....
Hilarious that at 7:23 I get the Hippy message that the update couldn't be completed when the PC's turned off; as I'm working on it....

You might be laughing, but I am not.....
@ Everyone: This thread has moved focus quite a bit, but I don't care. It is interesting hearing other peoples comments on aspects of W10. Bad AND good. Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops!

Seriously,
I don't find it funny day to day. My Win7 client base is stable, manageable & easily configurable.
Win7 is hard to even get shipped, as it's got issues with Gen7 Core processors.
(Much like XP once it was stable; Vista & (Win-Millenium were a pass)). (Win 2000 just a solid rock, moving up from NT4).
Win10 want's to "Get it Ready", detach me from my expertise.... Yet not get it right.
IT paid for my T-Bone steak tonight, but W10 is making my life a whole lot harder.
Cheers
Phil.

(rant alert)
...and this whole W10 failed updates issue can(and does) backfire on us poor technicians too. If you get a difficult customer, they expect you to be a genius and as such, can fix anything, and if you can't....
Then you're forever being rung becasue the last thing you fixed has gone wrong again, and they insist you put it right again for free because 'You did not fix it right last time!'
W10 this is. No other system.
The reason for the above, is if you disable spying and other such stuff, the next time W10 does a compulsory update, it restores the spying and undoes anything you have done - because Bill knows best.
Then you get the phone calls.....
I admit many people know this is W10's fault, and will pay for the re-visit, but some unhappy campers do not. Once that happens a couple of times, they start to question your competence, and all because of W10's bloody practices, and nothing to do with what I have been doing!
True, those people perhaps should be avoided(and I do once I identify them), and probably should not own a computer either, as they don't seem to comprehend the difficulties with the latest offering from Microsuck, but the problem is that their tablet or laptop is pre-loaded with W10 from the shop now, so there is very little choice.
(end rant)Smoke makes things work. When the smoke gets out, it stops!

I been away in Cooktown a few days, sorry all.
I can recommend this book. Its a free download, but if you want hardcopy its only a few dollars. REALLY !!!.
These guys have assembled everything together, and for me, its an easy read. Especially if you set yourself up with say one hour per day study time, and perhaps one chapter a day.
MOST of the Linux's are based on Debian ( the most secure and safest, also the hardest to learn) so if you actually read the whole book, there is little else to learn.
Somebody said he had mites !!! eeekkk the chemist can help. ( WTF is a mite??? ).
As far as a terminal goes I actually run "Terminal" https://wiki.gnome.org/Apps/Terminal And I guess I should also say I use gnome as my GUI. I do have KDE installed as well,(and quite a few others) so I can run specific KDE apps without having to download all the dependencies that are required each time I need something new. I also have them installed so I can steal people away from that "other OS ", because I wont even try and fix " Drongoes " anymore, for love OR money, read Grogsters last "rant". Yes I am slow and stupid, BUT not as stupid as windows, and my reputation does count for a LITTLE something. There are quite a few desktops with specific "tools" available for each flavour, and to make it easy to use from the GUI, I build them all into the kernal so they just run with a single klik. Yes I mostly use a GUI rather than a term
I have downloaded and installed putty to have a look at it, Ill let you know. For an editor I use vi, now called vim or improved vi. Its just a text based editor that can read and write almost any file, or edit your settings.
Have a look at the book.

Downloaded the book - thanks for the link. Will have a read.
Today, I needed to use a CP2102 USB adaptor on a W10 machine - it flatly refused to see it. Would not connect to it, would not even acknowledge it was there. I plugged exactly the same 2102 and USB cable into an old XP latop, and it picked it up right away.
Tried a flash-drive in the W10 USB port, and it picked that up. Tried the 2102 in the W10 machine again, won't see it.

Well, I'm very happy with my W7, and lots of other M$oft products, but I will NOT be forced into W10. And when if ever Microsoft deliberately disables W7, I will move permanently away from them, as will all companies that I am associated with.Senior?! Whatever it says, I'm a complete and utter beginner...

The software itself (W10) is fine, quite good even. But, I have told the latest update can be 4 - 5 gig approx. A fairly basic deal in Aus has maybe 3 or 4 gbit / month, maybe with some extras. So, a lot of users will be have data access shutdown unless they cough up more $$$. And its online tax time...
