Yeah I've read a few newspaper articles by Monckton. He has a very simplistic view of the problem. His point about the extra heat generated will be radiated into space demonstrates his lack of understanding. The reason the heat is rising is because it cant radiate into space because of the CO2. We arnt generating extra heat, but we are stopping it getting away as easily as it once did.

The other day I heard a politician say CO2 and a warmer average climate is good cause the tree's will grow faster, more crops. Yeah, in Siberia and Canada! In Australia we will get dryer in the south, where all the people and agriculture is, and wetter in the north, where less people live. Good for banana growers! Agriculture will move north, which is cyclone prone, so food will cost more for those who want to live in the south.

And of course we have Barnaby Joyce, who wants to know how much the carbon tax will cool the planet! Now there's an idiot, and he showed so much promise in the early days. He wants a simple answer to the most complicated question in history.

I've never seen this nation as divided as it is now. We almost had a CTS in place a few years ago and if it had gone through the nation would have got over it, like we did the GST, and gotten on with the job of adapting to change, and finding opportunity. The way it is now, it wont be long before they start burning scientists at the stake.

Thats my rant.

Now Roe does raise a good point about politics on a forum. What do they say, you should never discuss politics or religion with friends, or something like that. Forum threads like these do nothing to change someones mind, but do manage to aggravate at least half the people reading them.

I would like to get back to "Back Shed" only discussions, but I did say this post could go ahead so long as religion was kept out of it. So it can stay open for now, but please no one start a new political or religious ( including that new religion, Climate Change, you either believe or you dont! ) threads, cause I'll delete them.

i thought it was clever of you guys to put all the political stuff in one place.
and keep it out of the normal r.e. threads.
you Aussies come across as pragmatic and level headed and i am curious about how world events are perceived on the other side of the globe.

to me, the very act of building a windmill is a kind of political statement.

Hi Elecrondady1

The world events do effect us all as part of the mouse race, the many and varied opinions of what is happening is mainly being promoted by various interest Groups and as Glenn said it is like a new r*****on, whatever our beliefs are, we are acting, I feel for the good of our families and the human race in general, it is a shame that the same couldn't be said for the other groups involved. In Australia we are affected by climate change to a degree but my main beef here is that we export millions of tons of pollutant and the expect someone else to be responsible with the use of it. TAX IS THE ANSWER.
As we are a group of gentle minded people and do not wish to insult or be controversial about our observations, we should go on and do our best for environment, and not make fools of politicians and religions, we don't need to, as they do that for themselves.

All the best

EcoAlert: A Dozen Massive Volcanoes Reaching Nearly 10,000 Feet Above the Ocean Floor Found Near Antarctica
- by dailygalaxy.com - July 13, 2011

A chain of a dozen undersea volcanoes some reaching nearly 10,000 feet above the ocean floor , and several of them active, have been near Antarctica, south of the South Sandwich Islands — desolate, ice-covered volcanoes that rise above the southern Atlantic Ocean about halfway between South America and South Africa which erupted as recently as 2008. It was the first such discovery in that region.
"That's a big volcano. That's a very big volcano. If that was on land it would be quite remarkable," said Philip Leat, a volcanologist with the British Antarctic Survey who led a seafloor mapping expedition to the region in 2007 and 2010. "We knew there were other volcanoes in the area, but we didn't go trying to find volcanoes," Leat told OurAmazingPlanet. "We just went because there was a big blank area on the map and we had no idea what was there; we just wanted to fill in the seafloor."

"So it's very exciting," he said. "You go along and suddenly you see the bottom start to rise up underneath you, and you don't know how shallow it's going to get."

At one point, in the dead of night, the team encountered a volcano so large it looked as though the RRS James Clark Ross, the team's research vessel, might actually crash into the hidden summit. "It was quite frightening, actually," Leat said. The onboard instruments revealed that some of the peaks rise within 160 feet of the ocean's surface.

The team mapped an area about 100 miles wide and nearly the length of Britain. The missing parts of the image are where islands blocked the mapping sonar.

Though the peaks are largely invisible without the aid of 3-D mapping technology, Leat said their conelike silhouette is a dead giveaway. "There's no other way of getting that shape on the seafloor," he said. In addition, the researchers dredged up rocky material from several peaks and found it rife with volcanic ash, lumps of pumice and black lava.

The find backed up reports from a ship that visited the area in 1962, which indicated a hidden volcano had erupted in the region.

HERE'S A GOOD WAY TO LOOK AT YOUR HANDS. (MALE OR FEMALE) NEVER QUITE THOUGHT OF IT THIS WAY BEFORE.

Contributed by Isaiah

Grandma's Hands

GRANDMA'S HANDS A must read thru to the end please!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Grandma, some ninety plus years, sat feebly on the patio bench.. She didn't move, just sat with her head down staring at her hands.

When I sat down beside her she didn't acknowledge my presence and the longer I sat I wondered if she was OK.

Finally, not really wanting to disturb her but wanting to check on her at the same time, I asked her if she was OK. She raised her head and looked at me and smiled. 'Yes, I'm fine, thank you for asking,' she said in a clear voice strong...

'I didn't mean to disturb you, grandma, but you were just sitting here staring at your hands and I wanted to make sure you were OK,' I explained to her.

'Have you ever looked at your hands,' she asked. 'I mean really looked at your hands?'

I slowly opened my hands and stared down at them. I turned them over, palms up and then palms down. No, I guess I had never really looked at my hands as I tried to figure out the point she was making.

Grandma smiled and related this story:

'Stop and think for a moment about the hands you have, how they have served you well throughout your years. These hands, though wrinkled shriveled and weak have been the tools I have used all my life to reach out and grab and embrace life..

'They braced and caught my fall when as a toddler I crashed upon the floor..

They put food in my mouth and clothes on my back. As a child, my mother taught me to fold them in prayer. They tied my shoes and pulled on my boots. They held my husband and wiped my tears when he went off to war.

'They have been dirty, scraped and raw, swollen and bent. They were uneasy and clumsy when I tried to hold my newborn son. Decorated with my wedding band they showed the world that I was married and loved someone special

They wrote my letters to him and trembled and shook when I buried my parents and spouse.

'They have held my children and grandchildren, consoled neighbors, and shook in fists of anger when I didn't understand.

They have covered my face, combed my hair, and washed and cleansed the rest of my body. They have been sticky and wet, bent and broken, dried and raw. And to this day when not much of anything else of me works real well these hands hold me up, lay me down, and again continue to fold in prayer.

'These hands are the mark of where I've been and the ruggedness of life.

But more importantly it will be these hands that God will reach out and take when he leads me home. And with my hands He will lift me to His side and there I will use these hands to touch the face of God.'

I will never look at my hands the same again. But I remember God reached out and took my grandma's hands and led her home. When my hands are hurt or sore or when I stroke the face of my children and husband I think of grandma. I know she has been stroked and caressed and held by the hands of God..

I, too, want to touch the face of God and feel His hands upon my face.

When you receive this, say a prayer for the person who sent it to you, and watch God's answer to prayers work in your life. Let's continue praying for one another.

Passing this on to anyone you consider a friend will bless you both.

Passing this on to one not yet considered a friend is something God would have you do.

Treat everyone with politeness, even those who are rude to you
-- not because they are nice, But because you are. ~Author Unknown

You'd expect the peaks to be sharp as presumably all (or most) of the material expelled would quickly solidify/settle and not flow very far.

I would expect a lot of Steam and thermal turbulence during an eruption.
I imagine a large Bolder the size of a Lorrie? Truck) being ejected, Its forward surface being cooled while Magma brings up the rear, once free from the magma stream its heat creates a Steam Jet for several seconds adding velocity to its motion.
As You say, Lava would cool quickly under water and would not bond to itself solidly in all conditions. When a large quantity of debris builds at the same distance from the chimney, a land slide would follow
Particles of all sizes doing similar , would create a rounded top. (maybe?).

Hi Roe

From the sounds of the article I got the impression that the seabed was rising as well as the summits, could be a large pressure bubble like formed on Mt Sainthellens, it could pop up and form another volcanic island like some of the other pacific islands.

All the best

Dear Prime Minister,

Please find below our suggestion for fixing the Australia ’s economy.

Instead of giving billions of dollars to banks that will squander the money on lavish parties and unearned bonuses, use the following plan.

You can call it the Patriotic Retirement Plan:

There are about 5 million people over 50 in the work force.

Pay them Â$ 2 million each severance for early retirement with the following stipulations:

1) They MUST retire.
Five million job openings - unemployment fixed

2) They MUST buy a new Australian car.[….or boat !]
Five million cars or boats ordered - Industry fixed

3) They MUST either buy a house or pay off their mortgage -
Housing Crisis fixed

4) They MUST send their kids to school/college/university -
Crime rate fixed

5) They MUST buy Â$100 WORTH of alcohol/tobacco a week .....
And there's your money back in duty/tax etc

It can't get any easier than that!

Also:
Let's put the pensioners in jail and the criminals in a nursing home.

This way the pensioners would have access to showers, hobbies and walks.

They'd receive unlimited free prescriptions, dental and medical treatment, wheel chairs etc and they'd receive money instead of paying it out.

They would have constant video monitoring, so they could be helped instantly, if they fell, or needed assistance.

Bedding would be washed twice a week, and all clothing would be ironed and returned to them.

A guard would check on them every 20 minutes and bring their meals and snacks to their cell..

They would have family visits in a suite built for that purpose.

They would have access to a library, weight room, spiritual counselling, pool and education.

Simple clothing, shoes, slippers, PJ's and legal aid would be free, on request.

Private, secure rooms for all, with an exercise outdoor yard, with gardens.

Each senior could have a PC a TV radio and daily phone calls.

There would be a board of directors to hear complaints, and the guards would have a code of conduct that would be strictly adhered to.

The criminals would get cold food, be left all alone and unsupervised. Lights off at 8pm, and showers once a week. Live in a tiny room and pay Â$400.00 per week and have no hope of ever getting out.

Think about this (more points of contention):

COWS:
Is it just me, or does anyone else find it amazing that during the mad cow epidemic our government could track a single cow, born in Goondiwindi almost three years ago, right to the paddock where she slept in the feedlot at Bony Mountain?

And, they even tracked her calves to their stalls. But they are unable to locate 125,000 illegal immigrants wandering around our country. Maybe we should give each of them a cow.

Also:
Think about this ... If you don't want to forward this for fear of offending someone -- YOU ARE PART OF THE PROBLEM! It is time for us grumpy old folk of Australia to speak up!

Hi Gismo

Good Guess Mate.

Now for the health conscious, a little note on eggs as they have been maligned by man studies over the years as a health hazard but is it the production method that causes this as organic is good, makes you think of all the food we eat and the amount of processing and genetic manipulation affecting the food value.

I love eggs but due to a heart condition it has been recommended I do not eat them but now I feel better about the odd indulgence.

Dear Victor P.Alen,
She burst into my office today with a stack of papers and folders.
I was on the phone, but I could see my friend A.N. just couldn’t wait to talk to me.
So I put the person on hold, and it all started pouring out of her.
“Dr. Sears, Dr. Sears, we got the results!”
I helped A.N. convert her farm in Loxahatchee, Florida - a few miles from my clinic - over to producing organic eggs.
Pretty soon, the hens she and her husband tend started producing the most delicious eggs I had ever tasted. Then she started bringing them to my staff by the dozen.
The containers disappear in about two minutes flat. She makes me and my staff organic yogurt, too.
Not long after her eggs became such a big hit, I decided to have a study done on them. We had a lab in Chicago test them and measure to see how they compared to eggs you can buy at a grocery store.
Turns out there’s more to eggs than protein and the right kind of fat. They’re antioxidant powerhouses, too.
Protein from eggs is important, don’t get me wrong. Modern advice on eggs is not to eat them at all, or at least to throw the yolk away because it will kill you.
It’s a shame because eggs used to be the standard by which all other proteins were measured.
The protein value of a food is measured on the BV (biological value) scale. It tells you what percentage of a given nutrient source your body uses. Since eggs were considered the best source of protein because your body completely digests and uses them, they have a value of 100. A perfect score.
Soy, considered so “healthy” and full of protein by nutritionists and conventional doctors, scores only a 47 on the BV scale. Whole wheat has a protein score of only 49.

But there’s more going on with eggs than just protein.
A new study from Canada shows that egg yolks, the part of the egg you’re warned not to eat at any cost, doesn’t just have protein and minerals like calcium and selenium, but it also has antioxidants.
The researchers discovered that two egg yolks have almost twice as much antioxidant power as an apple, and about the same power as 25 grams of cranberries.1
And the results from the lab tests A.N. brought me on her eggs show they have even more antioxidants than the eggs from the Canadian study.
Her eggs are off the charts with omega-3s, antioxidant nutrients and protein.
The organic eggs my staff and I eat have:
65% fewer carbs than a regular egg
10% more protein
20% more iron
72% more vitamin A
211% more of the vision-sharpening carotenoid called lutein and zeaxanthin
319% more healthy omega-3s
1,664% more calcium2
You can tell right away organic eggs have more carotenoids because the yolks are more yellow. It has a lot to do with the fact that A.N.’s hens are allowed to run around in the warm sunshine instead of being caged up like commercial chickens are.
When I go there I see them fly over the fences and roam all over her farm, getting into everything. They scratch the dirt with their feet, flapping their wings and clucking softly, just like nature intended them to. You get the feeling they’re content.
You may not know this but modern hen farmers will tell you that their hens are prone to ovary problems. I think it’s because they’re fed too much soy. A.N. tells me hers have very few ovary problems since she stopped feeding them soy.
And the chickens produce more eggs and the eggs are bigger, too.
So while I always recommend eating eggs for strong, healthy bones, heart, muscles and a sharper mind, free-range organic eggs give you even more benefit. We now know they’re antioxidant powerhouses that can improve your vision, and fight inflammation.
Many grocery stores will have eggs marked as organic for sale. But it makes me feel good to know where my food is coming from, and I don’t feel comfortable buying eggs at the grocery store. I read one report where a few “organic” egg sellers in California were getting their eggs from huge industrial chicken farms that pack a coop with 36,000 birds that never see the light of day.3
I recommend getting to know a local organic egg producer yourself. If you don’t have a local egg farmer or can’t find one, here are four resources you can use to find free-range organic eggs:
www.cornucopia.org/organic-egg-scorecard – the Cornucopia Institute has an excellent list of the best organic egg producers in the country
www.lionsgrip.com/farms.html – a list of how-to’s when approaching a local farm to inquire about eggs and produce
www.localharvest.org/index.jsp – A complete index of farms near you.
www.facebook.com – Lots of farmers want you to come and buy their eggs, and many are on social media sites like Facebook waiting for you to find them.
To Your Good Health,

Al Sears, MD

Want yolks with a very strong yellow colour?

Instead of using wheat, barley, etc. as a feed/supplement, just feed them cracked corn (Maize for those 'over there'.)

I used to have chickens a few years ago, till the goanna ate them. Every day I let them roam around the yard so they could eat bugs etc, and they ate the kitchen scraps. Best eggs I've ever tasted.

When I buy eggs I go for the free range or organic one's. Cost a bit more but taste better and I like the idea my egg came from a happy chicken.

I've been eating roo lately. Taste great, very easy to eat, and low fat high iron. I do like the idea of eating a native animal thats soft footed and blends in with the environment, but I dont like the idea of eating a native that was butchered on the back of a Toyota 4WD. I think there are some tough regulations in place, like stainless steel bullets, time to market, etc. Watching this space.

Hi Glenn

I tried chickens at my place to, but between the foxes wild dogs and goanna's it was a loosing battle.

Coming from a farming area most of my life meat was always available, plenty of rabbits and Roos for the effort of shooting and butchering, the occasional deer and wild goat as well, when the kids where young and they ate like a horse it made sense now I can't really get to rapt in all the shooting and butchering for just too of us.

When on a walking trip for a week got real hungry and ate a Koala, not recommended as it was like eating a bottle of Vicks Vaporub.

I must say though that the natural cycle of sustenance made you feel better and more appreciative of natural food. Even made all our own bread and grew all or own vegies and the taste was something else not like the production line food we get now, I got some tomatoes last week, at $6 Kilo could have used them for cannon balls in the old days, had to fry them so i could eat them.

Ah the good old days

APPLE or PINEAPPLE

Beware

Fake Apple Store is so believable, even the employees think they work for Apple
Jul. 21, 2011 (4:11 pm) By: Jennifer Bergen

After a trip to New York City’s ChinaTown as a young teenager, I walked away with a $15 Gucci watch which I flaunted in front of all my friends back home when I returned. One friend pointed out that the “G” looked more like a “C,” which was rather embarrassing. However, the point is that some knockoffs are very believable. A counterfeit Apple Store in China has done such a good job at making itself look like the real thing that even the employees think they work at a real Apple Store.

The fake Apple Store is located in Kunming, a city in the southwestern part of China. There are only four Apple stores in China, a country with a population of 1.34 billion people. To put that into perspective, there are four Apple Stores in New York City with a population of 8.17 million people, and those are crowded enough as it is.

Needless to say, the need for Apple stores in China is great, so fake stores have been popping up. Many of them are obviously not genuine, like the “Apple Stoer,” which intentionally misspells its name. However, the store in Kunming does nothing to distinguish itself from a full-on Apple retail store. The store’s employees wear blue Apple shirts with the white Mac Logo and the white Apple name tags, and the store itself has Apple’s signature spiral staircase, acrylic product information panels, and Apple-looking posters.

The store was originally discovered by an expatriate blogger that goes by the moniker BirdAbroad. And, although it might not be an official Apple Store, an employee said the store sells genuine Apple products at the same price as is advertised on Apple’s website.

BirdAbroad said that the staff she spoke to seemed to believe they were employed by Apple. However, the Wall Street Journal spoke to one employee that said he knew the store wasn’t a real Apple Store, but as long as they were selling real Apple products so that customers didn’t come back angry, he really didn’t care.

So what will happen to the Kunming store now that Apple has most likely caught wind of this? The store may try to become a part of Apple’s network of authorized resellers, but it’s doubtful that Apple will give it the OK after the store acted under the guise of an official Apple Store this whole time.

As we know, Apple doesn’t usually take kindly to any sort of intellectual property or patent infringements, which has been most recently battled in court with HTC and Samsung.

Luckily for China, Foxconn, the Taiwanese company that handles the majority of Apple product manufacturing, recently announced it will spend $1.6 billion US to open its own chain of stores in China selling Apple products. Not only will this provide more official Apple retail outlets for the people of China, but it also gives Foxconn a double whammy in terms of its profits. The company’s total revenue last year was $6.63 billion, and Foxconn has admitted that the manufacturing of Apple devices just doesn’t bring in that much profit. The stores will help Foxconn make up for some of the loss of profit.

We seem to be going through a period of nostalgia, and everyone seems to think yesterday was better than today. I don't think it was, and I would advise you not to wait ten years before admitting today was great. If you're hung up on nostalgia, pretend today is yesterday and just go out and have one hell of a time. ~Art Buchwald

Just a thought for those of us who have too many yesterdays and not enough tomorrows.

Spent most of today at Cow Bay beach with Blondy and the dogs and two bottles of bubbly , thankfully my memory is not good enough to remember yesterday.

Now don't tell anybody but Chivers is on special at the post office pub in Mossman, but I am keeping mine for a tomorrow

Just noticed it is tomorrow! and I wrote the above yesterday!

Allan,
Your right I guess there is no fool like an old fool but than again youth is wasted on the young. I know from my perspective kids growing up here in the North, have no where near the freedom or lifestyle I enjoyed. The downside of our magic weather(except during those cyclones) bringing population(and fishing inspectors) our way. But some say the only good thing about the good old days is they are gone.
Not sure when I wrote this, forgot to take me little red tablet
