Inspired by the photos posted on Paul's E-ink weather thread, and as a slight digression on all the technical threads, I thought we should post photos of where we all exercise our little grey cells.

Here are my messy ones:

First one is where I do most stuff, and the 2nd image is of my component draws/boxes just to the right of the workbench.

The last two photos are of my 2nd workshop area which was a spare room, but became a 2nd work area over Christmas '17. The plan was to keep one of them tidy - false logic perhaps, as they are both now messy! I need to have a clean-up....

Maybe some tips on how to maintain a tidy work area might be helpful for those of us who aren't quite so tidy.
I know putting things away is a good start & I can do that for some things but not others. If things are put away, it's remembering where they were put days later is a problem.
Trying to decide what to keep & what not too is also a chore. Some people can throw out stuff they haven't used for a while & not worry about it, but others like me can't.

Thanks Grogster for the post.

I see you have found yourself an avatar, ChopperP. Appropriate.

One thing I thought was a good idea to keep things tidy, was a box or bin or whatever, that you filled with whatever was on the bench at the end of the day, leaving the bench clean.

That worked.

The only problem was that I never bothered to sort the box/bin/whatever the next day, so a couple of days later, and my bench was all cluttered again!

I plan to try to have a bit of a clean up this weekend.

Yes, I thought I'd better have one as "Chopper" can have different connotations over here. Been called Chopper since my training days in the early '70's. (That's 1970's). Had problems uploading it, but Glenn fixed it.

I do something similar & end up with containers filled with all sorts of stuff.

Started on one this morning then had to go shopping.

I always found during my working life that people with tidy benches and workshops never got much work done. Most good mechanics, technicians that I have come across, have an untidy work area.
Paul.
edit.... Another thing I have noticed is that although it looks like a big mess the owner usually knows where everything is.Edited by palcal 2018-04-07

Remember a while back, Jaycar 2016 catalog had some workbenches shown, some good ideas too.
My own workbench for electronics/computer and the like is far more cluttered to the extent of practically unworkable, cant see the surface of the table and the floor is no different, shame on me.

Work has migrated to a bench outside and looks much the same now!

Also do other mechanical work and worked out a fairly good solution for the problem provided there is room.
Every time a workbench got cluttered up (jobs stopped because we did not have parts to Finnish the job) WE SIMPLY BUILT ANOTHER WORKBENCH.
We are up to bench number 6 I think?
Dose not include other places that end up being used as a bench and shouldn't be.

Sorry don't think I will put a photo up, I can imagine the first time a person sees it they will say f@#k out loud.
Cheers Aaron

@Revlac. I saw your photo of the corrugated snake back in January & I was wondering at the time how come you still had free wall space, 'cos I haven't in my shed. Room for another bench?. Portable work tops etc come in handy at times.
I also have benches I wouldn't post photos of.

@ Revlac - I say F**k loudly every time I have a new PCB to assemble, and I take a look at the state of my workbench. You are not alone!!!!!

OK,

I had refrained from responding to this post but I think you grumpy old men need a laugh.. It may as well be at my expense.

Bench 1 (Main Computer working bench)

Bench 2 Sometimes Soldering/tinkering bench but mostly a `where do I put that?' bench.

OK,
That will propably be my last post on TBS as I am sure I will be shamed off this site for bringing the game int disrepute.

Kind Regards,

Mick

EDIT***
Yes that is a Johnny Walker BLUE label on the top of the 2nd bench.. Sadly now empty.

OK I had a look at Bigmik's bench and did have a laugh.. Thanks for the humor.
I cant let Bigmik take all the shame, so here is a shot of the computer/workbench, lots of components have come from old TV/computer monitors and other parts useful instead of buying parts.

I could use a shovel and a wheelbarrow.
