Hi Jim, Just some ideas on some updates to MM Edit please? 1:- Option for "Backup before Load" to compliment the "Save before load". From what I can work out, MM Edit does not backup an unchanged file so the saved file does not get backed up. What I have been doing is after a save, do an inconsequential change to the program & leave it open so that it will be backed up when the scheduled BU time occurs. 2:- Adding "*.lib" to the "Save as type" Dropbox. 3:- Auto fill the current filename in the "File name" box for "Save As..". Would save typing whole file name in if only the version number is changed. I know you can click on a file in the File List, but if you want to save it elsewhere & forget to do this or to copy the file name from elsewhere, it's a tiny bit of a pain. Just some ideas for an already great program. Thanks. ChopperP |

1. I didn't see a need to backup when there are no changes or a need to Save and backup at the same time. As it stands, the backup timer starts from when you do any save. I think that includes save-on-load but I will have to check. 2. You can type in any extension you like. It would be as quick as selecting a type from a pull-down list and doesn't restrict the user. I occasionally save a txt files. 3. "Auto fill the current filename" is something that I have considered. I try to put the file name as a comment at the start of my programs so I can easily copy and paste but auto-filling has merit. Jim VK7JH MMedit |

OK, Thanks Jim for that. For No 1, I backup elsewhere, so if the current file is saved, a backup to another location (with timestamp) would be good. 2: My typing is slow :-) 3: I do resort to putting the file name at the start & copying it when I remember. Another question or two I've been wanting to ask for a while now is that when away from MM Edit then coming back to it, even from MM Chat, it takes two clicks of the mouse before MM Edit will actually register the clicks & do stuff if you get what I mean. Also, if I hit the space bar immediately after a Load, it will do another load. Thanks ChopperP |

That is something that has annoyed me for many years. It won't get fixed until I redo MMEdit totally in another language. This is something I started out to do but got sidetracked for various reasons. I think that is related to the above. Here, Windows is remembering the last action. I have trouble forcing the edit window to get focus. I have tried, often. Jim VK7JH MMedit |

Thanks Jim, I've just got to remember to double click in the Edit screen before doing anything else. ChopperP |

On the backup thing, I also backup my code(anything important, really) in a triple-redundant fashion. One local copy, one on a backup medium(USB drive), and one copy to the cloud(Dropbox). I also backup to my file-server. The idea being that if the main machine dies in a very bad way such that the HDD can't be read, I can suck a copy from the USB drive or the file-server. If something catastrophic was to happen(fire/flood/tornado etc), once home has been re-established, I can then suck a copy from the cloud. No-one wants to re-do hours, perhaps months of work..... ![]() I learnt this from my Sister years ago when we were teenagers. She was writing her thesis(in those days on a DOS laptop), and the HDD died. I had tried to tell her to backup her work(on floppy disk in those days), but she refused to do it: 'It's saved on the f-ing computer!' My sister and I did NOT like each other in those days(punches had been thrown by me, and sharp finger-nails slashed by her), but to see how upset she was when the laptop died and she lost EVERYTHING...... I would not wish that on anyone. The laptop internal PSU died, and it cooked the mainboard and the HDD too. Not good. ![]() To cut a long story short, what I am saying is that when it comes to backups, it's probably a good idea to do them manually rather the relying on any kind of automated process. Once you get it in your head, it is only a few right-click-paste operations in Windows Explorer to various locations. This post has become longer then I planned..... ![]() Smoke makes things work. I know what you mean Grogster. We do take backups lightly sometimes. Which reminds me, got to get SWMBO to back her stuff up or it will be a stuff-up ![]() I do check my MMEdit backup drive folder regularly to check that the current files are being updated there. ChopperP |

To make your backup routine easier try running ROBOCOPY from a batch file. My personal BK.CMD file is attached. It generally takes about 4 minutes to run. Paul in NY 2018-04-11_214338_BK.ZIP |

Went to try to do her Backup tonight. Bloody 2TB Seagate USB Expansion Drive which had been sitting in the cupboard since the last BU failed. Nothing on USB on a couple of PC's although it comes up under Drives in Device Manager, nothing else happens. Removed it from it's case & plugged it directly into the motherboard of a PC. Not registering in the BIOS or in Device manager . So it pays to check the backup medium as well periodically. Currently backing up to another drive. ChopperP |
