Me too.

It was in the Atari series of 8-bit machines, and I did all my first years of learning how to program on the Atari and the 6502. I did look at learning 6502 machine code a couple of times, but it was too difficult.

VIC-20 for me. Plenty of fun with the 6502 Machine code as well. Lot easier than what MMBasic is becoming Edited by Chopperp 2018-04-15

Nice
I spent many years on the old C64, did some programing but mostly games back then, A lot of fun was had, I remember The old south side club and the group talking about Fast Hack'em.
Last time I used the C64 was in 1999, still have one in the shed somewhere.

We had a apple II europlus as the school computer- just the one and it ran the school office as well as being used for teaching computing classes - 18" b/w vhf awa tv, with composite video input
Had a vic20 at home, then a microbee16k, then a c64- the vic was still running and still being used up until the 2000's
Loved that machine

@ChopperP -- You're right, those old 8 bit basics were easier than MMBasic .... but they didn't do any graphic video, touch sensitive video, or double precision math in hardware, but they were fun.

I guess I'm an older geezer than any of you geezers, my first machine was an IBM 1401. The first machine I had home was a DEC PDP8. I remember talking to Bill Gates when Microsoft was headquartered down in Arizona or Nevada somewhere. Their sole product was a single precision ROM loaded Basic found on the Radio Shack TRS80.

After the TRS80 got disk drives and an operating system we called trash dos a much superior substitute operating system called DOS PLUS became available and it contained a beautiful Basic interpreter which didn't need line numbers, but by then I was already planning my retirement.

Ahhhh ... the good old days.

Actually, Don and a colleague Rick, created a static Z80 back in ... Ohhhh welll way too far back for me to remember now..

It was invaluable for checking address decoding problems... I doubt we could have repaired systems as quickly as we did using any other method.

Yes, my Atari 800XL is still in the shed - covered in dust....

A few years ago, I built an SIO-2-PC adaptor, and bought a copy of APE from the same site, which allowed me to use an old PC to emulate Atari peripherals - most notably the floppy disk drives.

I then used the REAL Atari to copy all my still-working 5.25" floppy disks(the REAL floppy floppies!) to .ATR images on the PC. Most were multi-boot games disks, but now they are all safely backed up as disk image files, I don't need to worry about the originals becoming unreadable, or the Atari hardware failing. I still use the Atari800 emulator from time to time, and load in those ATR images, and can play the old games - brings back memories.

Yep The old 5.25 floppy disc was great, some of them went for years, even with some mold on them they could still be read... If the poor old 1541 drive could spin the bloody thing,
I never had any success with the more modern 3.5 drives

Thought I would drop a photo or 2
This is my old mans C64 found in the shed covered in dust, it had a custom made boot rom (Red screen and fast boot) and fitted with a reset switch and turbo on off.

The 6510 is at the top 6th from the left.
The custom rom is 4th from the left.

The graphics and sound on these where impressive at the time compared to others.
Just a bit of fun.

Yes, from what I remeber reading, the Z80 CPU is actually a superior chip in many ways vs the 6502, but the 6502 was cheaper. And when you are talking millions of chips in millions of units, even a few cents matter.

Those old PC's and C64/Atari's - inside, they are a thing of beauty, with all those chips all interconnected. These days, it would all be in one chip. Well, it IS. Look at the Micromite/Maximite/MMX.....

Reminds me of the KIM-1 and SYM-1 6502 boards that we used when I did a TAFE microprocessor course many many years ago.

Yeah, that video was where I first saw the monster 6502. Perhaps I should have also posted about the Gigatron, but you have done me the service now.
