Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

Hello all.

When I built this latest PC, after activating Windoze, I went to download Movie Maker, which was part of Microsoft Essentials, only to find that MS have discontinued support for it, and you can no longer download it from Microsoft.

I loved Movie Maker, as it was simple and easy to drive. Can any members here suggest a free alternative? Normally, all I want to do is trim video. I don't want to do fancy editing or visual effects things(past perhaps the basic ones that Movie Maker used to have).

I don't want an editor that I have to spend the rest of my life learning how to use - must be simple with simple video editing features.

Any suggestions?

I went through the same a month ago. I also loved Movie Maker, it was easy to use but powerful enough to do what I wanted.

I do believe there are unofficial links that will let you download it, see if any other forum members can suggest one.

I did install a program called Shotcut , and that got me out of trouble. It works, and no doubt has lots of features once you get the hang of the interface, but I struggled with it. I still prefer Movie Maker.

There is 'HD Movie Maker - FREE' in the Microsoft store.
I don't want to sign up to Microsoft so I didn't try to download it but it might be worth a look.

I have Pinnacle Studio - not free.
I must try it again sometime and see if my current version runs on W10.

Jim

Edit: Well bugger me, I can download it without signing in!

Edit again: "Saving is not available on the free version, do you want to buy the Pro version?"

These are free apps in the Microsoft store:
HD Movie Maker
Video Editor & Movie Maker
There are many more free ones if you search on "Video Editor".

Not sure if any of them are any good as we use professional video editing software (Apple Final Cut for old projects, Adobe Creative Suite for newer projects and Avid for features).

I've been using Format Factory 3.9.0 for many years. Later versions are not as stable. It's much faster than Movie Maker since it doesn't have to re-sample the file completely, it just copies it.

Thanks chums.

I downloaded a couple of free ones from the MS store, but I don't like them very much.
They are full-screen apps(no visable taskbar, Start button or window controls etc), and most of the ones I could find insisted on touch-screen editing, so won't work with mouse and keyboard - they specifically said that.

When I searched for 'HD Movie Maker - FREE' or just Movie Maker, I am NOT given that as an option:

I have a feeling that HD Movie Maker is Windoze 10 only. I am not running Windoze ten, I am running 8.1 Pro. I think that is why this is not an option for me. I seem to recall reading on the MS Website that this is the replacement for standard Movie Maker, but you must be running W10 - it won't f-ing run on 8.1 - just another way to try to force people onto W10.

Well, I won't be forced - sorry.

Interesting days now with windoze 10. I didn't like the add filled version of solitaire that 10 provided so I downloaded the traditional program that was free with earlier versions. Twice now after a major update msoft has found it necessary to delete the program. Luckily the install file still exists and I can re-install it. Not sure that I like the situation tho

I should mention I used Movie Maker / Shotcut, for editing videos, not just converting them to a different format. I basically wanted something where I could load up recorded videos and stills, then edit them ( cut, splice, etc ) into one video, add background audio, then save it. Movie Maker was good at that, and you could add transitions between sections, etc.

I now use iSpring Free Cam 8 for screen capture, and Shotcut for the editing and saving. I do miss Movie Maker.
