Notice. New forum software under development. It's going to miss a few functions and look a bit ugly for a while, but I'm working on it full time now as the old forum was too unstable. Couple days, all good. If you notice any issues, please contact me.

I used this image from Google, to build a custom USB cable for something - which then refused to work. Bill kept on moaning that the USB device had malfunctioned and Windows does not recognise it. See anything in this image you don't like?

White is D-, Green D+.

The order is Red, White, Green, Black, (Shield).

Edit:
(You know, not that the insulation color affects anything, but this assumes that the other end of the cable is wired in the same order, of course. I used to make offhand comments with people that were light on electrical abilities that the trouble with something was that there was red current flowing through the blue wire...)Edited by CircuitGizmos 2018-08-24

Plus there are cables out there that are either wired wrongly or use their own colour scheme altogether. I am sure that some 'manufacturers' simply wire it up so that it 'works' with no regard for any actual colour for particular usage- which does kind of make some sense with sealed plugs at each end, totally stuffs things if you cut a plug off of course

The USB document specifies colors. Would that make a cable that uses the wrong colors non-compliant? Technically, yes.

The cable I am making is hopefully just a one-off. I got the cable from Jaycar, as I wanted to be sure it was of some kind of standard. Testing with the multimeter shows that D+ is green, as pretty much all of the other Google images show. I would have to pick the one that was wrong, wouldn't I.....

Don't trust the red and black for power either.

Made another end, and this time made green D+ and white D-. I also checked the black and red wires to be sure. THIS time, it worked just fine. I have now used it to program MMBASIC into a chip.

On the plus side, this WILL make me remember that green is D+ and white is D- in a standard cable.
